Vista Networking with other VISTAS (not xp)
I cannot get my Vista wireless laptop to recognize the other computer, also a Vista, on the network. The other Computer is the desktop and has the wireless networking adapter attached to it (linksys). I have made sure all the necessaries are open on Network (ie sharing files, network discovery, password protecting etc.) and I also made sure they are under the same name workgroup. I actually renamed them both under a new network in the hopes that this would rectify the problem. I have gone under Microsoft and tried everything that the website tells me to do...but it still does not recognize the other computer. Now I can recognize the wireless, because I can get online with the laptop. But I cannot see the other computer, or access the printer. Please help, everytime I post other people just post the same problem except theirs are always vista/xp. This is NOT a vista/xp problem. Both computers are Vista and I'm going crazy trying to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

First make sure both Vista computers can ping each other, after that check out these simple file sharing or password protected file sharing articles to spot any wrong configuration.

Hi, Thank you for posting. Have you tried dawoodds suggestions, and how it works? Additionally, I would like to suggest the following: If everything worked before on the Windows Vista computer, a quick solution is to restore the system back to the previous status when the issue didnt occur with System Restore. (Note: Performing a system restore may cause the loss of the current system settings; therefore, before doing this, please make sure that the system restore point is not too old and set a restore point for the current status.) Please also try the following to narrow down the issue: 1. Access computers share with both \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX\folder and \\computer name\folder [type them one by one in the Run command (Win+R)] to see if it works. 2. Just as a test, you can disable the share and re-configure the sharing on the computers and ensure that you have assigned the Full-Control permissions to Everyone on both Sharing and Security tabs of the share folders properties. Then try to access the share to see how it works. File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx 3. Please ensure that all the updates have been applied on both computers. 4. Please disable the security software (anti-virus, firewall, etc.) on the computers and check it works. 5. If you have another computer, please add it to the network to see how it works. Hope the issue can be resolved soon. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
