Vista Networking
Vista networking has to be the most user"Unfriendly" *** I have ever seen. I can see vista to vista machines, but not vista to XP. I am going thru a wireless router which shows up. Oh well I will *** and moan for a while and maybe somewhere in "help" I can find something, or keep searching forums. By the way this HP Vista machine I bought is very responsive and quicker than XP. Little to no bugs. I know not everyone is experiencing this. I also notice that anything under 1gb of RAM you will suffer.

Not neccessary to have over 1GB of RAM, my machine is running so perfect with 256+128 MB RAM with Vista Ultimate. I create projects in Visual Studio 2005 there, visiting forums, writing a Word 2007report and checking e-mail through Windows Live Mail Desktop while Windows Live OneCare is running in background, WLM and Yahoo! Messenger. It's just how to well use your computer so that you can benefit from it. Good luck

Well, it's been a week and I still haven't been able to network my XP computers with my new Vista machines. I would guess I've spent about 20 hours on this now, including 2 calls to Microsoft, 1 call to Symantec, and 1 call to HP. I've tried every suggestion I've read on the net - turning off password protect sharing, creating the same user accounts on all the machines, reconfiguring firewalls in every manner possilbe, disabling firewalls, disabling network adapters, downloading special patches, etc. etc. Nothing seems to have any effect. To make matters worse, I have the same problem at my office and my home office. . . so I'm dealing with the same issue at 2 locations with completely different networks. This is a complete nightmare. I've resisted the temptation for almost 15 years, but I'm seriously considering returning my five thousand dollar paper-weights and trading them in for Macs. Has ANYBODY solved this nightmare yet??

Well I wish I could help but I do feel your pain. I'm having the exact same problem (submitted new post before reading yours). XP and Vista boxes both connect to the internet just fine yet can't see each other. Both can ping the router though. Have you seen this? Something about a patch to xp machines so they are discoverable to Vista (wonder if it works both ways?) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 "Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP"

That worked for me, try this: On the XP machine(s), apply this patch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 That will enable your machines to see each other. Then if you have a software firewall running, either disable it (just to test) or set it to trust the other machine's IP address.

1. Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup. 2. To share an XP folder, right-click it and select Sharing & Security > Sharing Tab > and put a check mark in Share this folder on the network and optionally, Allow Network users to change my files You only need to share the highest level folder, e.g. not every sub-folder. A little hand should appear on the icons of those that are shared. Alternatively, drag the folders you want to share to the Shared Documents folder (Public folder in Vista). In XP Professional you may have to turn off Simple File Sharing in Folder Options > View Tab > Advanced Settings at the end. 3. In Vista, go to Control Panel > Classic View > Network and Sharing Center and make sure you have Network Discovery, File Sharing and Public Folder Sharing all set to On and, if youre not using passwords set Password Protected Sharing to Off, unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on all computers in your network. If you have it on, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. To share a folder, click it > Share on the Toolbar > Advanced Sharing, click Share this folder > Apply > OK, etc. As you dont have Password Protected Sharing turned on, you have to change the security permissions on your folder to allow 'Everyone' access, i.e. right-click the folder > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add and type Everyone (not the quotes) into the box and OK. Tick the boxes next to the permissions you want to allow, then Apply > OK, etc. You may see some screens coming up with message 'Error Applying ..'. These is normal and can be ignored by clicking Continue. Two little people should appear on the icons of those that are shared. An alternative way of sharing is to drag the folders you want to share to the Public folder. 4. Windows firewall is normally set to allow file and printer sharing but if you have a third-party firewall make sure file and printer sharing is enabled so that each machine can talk to the other(s). Dont disable the Windows firewall if its the only one youre running. 5. To see or copy files, click Start > My Network Places (Network in Vista) and the computers/folders/files should appear. Using Windows Explorer, drag them from one PC to the other.
