Vista Media Server (Vista 32-Bit SP1 business)
I am having an issue with the media sharing feature. It works fine until I restart the computer. It's set to automactic start when windows does, however, I have to stop the service and then restart it to make it work. Digging through security policies and services I could not find any reason for this. I checked the firewall and it was set to enable media sharing. I don't have this problem with the XP computer in my house. As an IT professinal I find the whole thing rather frustrating. It's not that it's a big deal that I have to disable and then enable it after every restart. It's more a matter of pride, I suppose. There is pretty much no security on my computer protecting the media from anyone on my home network. Anyone have any idea what is causing this?

Hello Sean, Based on my experience, this issue may be related to 3rd party software or service. Try a clean boot: (KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135 Let us know the result if possible. Were glad to provide further assistance. Regards, Lionel

Hi Lionel, I would be really grateful for some help in this category too if you have time. Specifically i am having trouble with my Playstation 3 not being able to recognise my laptop/WMP 11as a media server and i am unable to find any solutions on the net that go beyond the obvious. Here goes; Vista 32bit Ultimate SP1. I am running a private network to connect to the internet with Network discovery, media sharing and file sharing on. Its WPA personal TKIP encryption and i of course have the key. I am using a static IP succesfully through a wireless router to connect to the internet. I have enabled media sharing on the PS3, enable the internet connection and setupwireless connection on the PS3 to use the same router and wireless connection. It uses of course the same encryption etc as it has to and i can succesfully connect to the internet on it. I have checked the router itself and it has two devices connected to it; 1 being the laptop the other having a MAC address that matches the PS3. I can ping the PS3's IP address from the laptop successfully. The Services that i believe are required for Media sharing are all started; Windows Media Player Networking service, UPNP Device Host and SSDP device discovery. There are no exceptions that are not enabled in my firewall that relate to Windows Media Player and my Anti Virus software, AVG does not as far as i know block anything. I have gone into Windows Media Player, Tools, Options,Library, Media Sharing. The chkBox for 'Share my media to' is ticked and the icon displayed for this chkbox is a device with a green tick box - the caption 'Other users of this PC'. At no point does my PS3 or an 'Unknown device' show up to be selected other than this. Help. Would be extremely grateful if you can shed any light on where i might go next. Cheers Matt H
