Vista Home Premium SP1
Hello, I have a Vista laptop that can no longer copy or move files to any XP or Samba network shares. This was working at one time, but has since stopped. I receive the following error when trying to copy a file from my local drive. There is a problem accessing (path to local file) Please check your network connection etc..etc.. I have turned off the firewall and windows defender, network discovery in on and file sharing enabled(with password auth disabled). the workgroup is set correctly... I've tried disabling UAC to no avail......Like I said this just stopped working...(maybe after a windows update)?? Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

Hi, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Ensure that the computers are on the same network and the same workgroup. 2. Please check if the computers can ping others with the computers IP Addresses and names. 3. Try to access the share with both \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX(IP Address)\folder and \\computer name\folder [type them one by one in the Run command (Win+R)] to see if it works. 4. Just as a test, please also try to disable the Windows XP and Windows Vista shares and reconfigure the shares. You can refer to: File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx 5. Regarding the issue that Windows Vista cannot access the Samba share, please configure the Network Security setting to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated under Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\ of the Group Policy Editor. You can also refer to the following: Network security: LAN Manager authentication level http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738867.aspx If you have another Windows Vista computer on the network, please check if it will encounter the similar issue. Hope this helps.Nicholas Li - MSFT

In regards to samba, the problem is not related to NTLM. When I first set this up I had to go into the registry to set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA to set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1 because there is no policy editor for Vista Home. The samba share is experiencing the same issue as the windows shares...same error. Like I said, this was working at one point..I've even gone as far as to remove the Norton suite from the machine. I do have a Vista Business machine on the network as well and it doesn't exhibit the same symptoms...

Hi, Thank you for updating. May I know if you can successfully ping other computers which have shares? At this time, please also check the following: 1. Please go to the share folders properties on the Windows XP computers and ensure that you have assigned Full-Control permissions to Everyone on both Sharing and Security tabs. Then try to access this Windows Vista share and check how it works. 2. If you enabled simple file sharing on Windows XP computers, please check if Guest account has also been enabled. You can also disable the simple file sharing and reconfigure the sharing on the Windows XP computer with the following Knowledge Base: How to disable simple file sharing and how to set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874 3. Reset the firewall settings on the problematic computer: 1) Click the Start Button. 2) In the search bar type wf.msc and press Enter. 3) Right-click the root Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local Computer and select Restore Defaults. 4) When the promote appears, click Yes. 4. Boot the problematic computer to clean boot environment and have a check. How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 5. You can setup a share on the Windows Vista laptop and see if other computers on the network can access it. If the issue persists, please also capture a screenshot on the error message appeared for our further research: Capture a screenshot ============== 1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2) Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3) In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4) The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5) Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click Desktop on the left pane and then click "Save". Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and share its URL with us. Thanks Nicholas Li - MSFT
