Vista Firewall keeps turning off by itself...
My Vista Home Premium Firewall keeps turning off by itself... Mind you I do have Windows Live One Care [WLOC] Firewall installed and working. The WLOC Firewall is set to auto. Does this automactically turn off the Vista Firewall? Naturally Iam somewhatconcerned by my Vista Firewall constantly turning off. My computer hasa wired connectionto a wireless router (the router has its own built in firewall) and an Xbox 360 wirelessly connected to the network as a Media Center Extender. I keep setting the Vista Firewall to 'On' (i.e. Recommended)and after an unknown period of time I find that it has been turned off again. If it is in fact WLOC turning the Vista Firewall off it, would be niceif WLOCcould givesome kind of obvious sticky notification (i.e. when I come back in the morning Iwould seean openwindowon my desktop that says 'WLOC has turned off the Vista Firewall. This is normal. Don't panic.'). Perhaps there has been some notification, but I wan't around to see it. I have now turned on 'Include detailed firewall logging in the support log' but I either did not find or recognize any information that would help answer this question for myself. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I don't think there is conflicts between WLOC and Windows Vista internal Firewall. I've been using WLOC since July 2005, it's good software and it detects viruses, worms and torjans easily. The firewall also is very good and it's working so smoothly. You can have both your Vista turned on. Regarding your Windows OneCare turned off, if you fail to keep it on, try the following: 1-Open command prompt with Administrator Preivlages (Right click on Command Prompt and select Run As Administraor). 2-Type: "net stop winss" without quotos. 3-When you see message of successful turning off for WOC, type this command: "net start winss" without quotos. 4- Check your firewall, it should turn on. If you still have problems, let me in the know. Good luck

When you install One care itturns off the Windows Vista Firewall and add it Own Firewall.

Sorry, I am not quite clear on your answer (too brief).Your replyanswered half of my question (WLOCdoes turn off the Windows Firewall after installation). The other half of the question is does WLOC keep turning off the Windows Firewall? I am trying to figure out if there is something wrong in my system or if everything is functioning as it should. One other question. Is it advisable to have the Windows Firewall turned off when using WLOC? Thanks.

Only 1 FIREWALL at a time is on, so IF One Care firewall is running, the Built in Vista firewall turns off. If you remove One care then the Vista Builin Firewall turns on again.Soyou system is workcorrectly. You can only have one firewall working on a computer at at time, just like on anti-virus program

Your answer does not add up. I have this problem on one computer, but all three of my systems have Windows one care. Also Windows one care is the program that keeps complaining that the firewall is turned off. So my ? is, who the hell is turning off my firewall ? It only happens when I restart, I think.

I too am having the exact same symptoms. Is there a way to validate what firewall is active at any given time?

A'right, I'm facing the same problem; OneCare complains about FW being off, while _it_ is supposedly the one doing it. ; would you security folks at Microsoft get your acts together?Technically one _can_ have multiple firewalls so long as the FWs 1) don't nix each other, _and_ 2) they sync up their rules in a deterministic way and regularly. Are you fixing this issue (a patch or something in the pipe?) or posting a workaround?

NOT impressed by MS response to this issue...they care about security...right. This thread looks to be a year running feb 07 to feb 08 and right or wrong the customer is wondering what is going on!! I have this issue AND I have the goshopex virus... SO something is not protecting my system. HEY Bill! Whad d'up!!

I have had this happening on a new laptop with Vista Home Premium for months. May be linked to Spybot's TeaTimer, which monitors changes in Registry. If the installation of TeaTimer began this (not sure), and it prevents Registry entry of Firewall ON as permenant, then the next boot will have Firewall OFF. Cannot find way to keep TeaTimer offat bootup, as MSCONFIG Start page doesn't list it. It appears to me that M$ only concerns itself with two things--sales revenue and bad publicity from a security breach on a global scale. Gregg

I've not personally come across this problem in person, but a m8's dad has this exact problem as have others. I've suggested the above and more. And none of it has worked. But today I thought more about what the people have been using that are getting this problem and the majority are Laptop users. But they have one thing in common. They are all using wireless router/modem connections. My thought is this, because Vista (all versions) automatically turns itself off when the presence of another firewall is detected. I think maybe the problem isn't on the Laptop or PC itself, but that Vista is detecting thewireless router/modem firewall instead, and then is turning itself off. This is only theorectical idea, as I haven't had the chance to try it. I do know that all router/modems, whether they are wirelessor just wired, have the firewall on by default. And as I've read that on many tech forums that the only firewall installed a Vista machine, isonly Vista's own. The wireless router/modem is the only other place that Vista could detect another firewall.

i don't have a laptop. i don't have a router firewall. it keeps popping up on WLOC that the firewall is turned off. it was turned on and running fine for a month w/ WLOC installed. vista firewall ran fine before WLOC install. now all of a sudden its turned off, and i can't turn either of the firewalls on ???? i click "fix", "turn on"..and it just freezes up. this is a joke...any more ideas.microsoft security team: who turned off my firewall, how did they get access, and why isn't this fixed?

Holy cow! I have this exact same issue - and it just started - after a full year with this software configuration (Vista + OneCare). I'm glad to see that it may be a non-issue. I thought I really didn't have my firewall/malware protection. I kept manually going in and turning everything back on. But now I see that OneCare is on and just Vista is turning off. I hate having a big error shield in the bottom tray. Microsoft updates ALL THE TIME, why not fix this glitch? It totally sucks. I've been wanting to buy a new computer but am literally waiting until Vista is no longer the operating program that comes with the computer. (sigh)

Amen to your message MsSchahlett! I have been having this same OneCare/SecurityCenter problem for the past 36 hours, with no good explanation from MS support. Mine is a brand new Windows computer (3 weeks old) running Windows Live One Care. Until this week it was operating fine. Now, like you, I've been getting frequent red error shields and have been manually going in to turn Firewall and Malware protection back on. I don't understand why these MicroSoft products seem to be in conflict. If one is supposed to predominate, why doesn't it shut down the other without generating an error shield?

I share your greif. I'm also having the same issues on my daughter's computer. I purchased OneCare mainly to avoid compatability issues, but now I know even MS has a hard time producing programs to work within its own OS. Just think what other software vendors have to go through! By the way my daughter's computer is a Vista Desktop and less than a year old. I purchased OneCare at the same time as the computer meaning I have never installed any other internet security package on this computer.

This same problem has been happening for about a week. I have Vista Home Premium with Windows Live One Care. I'm glad I'm not alone and I'll stop trying to "fix" it since it's more than likely one of the updates that were applied. Just like some of the other posters I bought WLOC because I hoped it would be the least likely to have random Windows compatibility issues... so much for having hope in MS.

I just wanted to chime in as well...and hope that MS is listening today! The same problem has been happening to me for the past few days, and it is frustrating as HE double hockey sticks to have to keep addressing the problem! I've not been that impressed with WLOC, but figured that since I hadn't had to pay much attention to it, it was doing its job. Now I have to wonder. If it can't work with its own creator's OS, am I really supposed to believe that it is keeping out ____ that was designed to get around the OS and WLOC???!!!Does anyone also have the problem of their anti-malware software all of a sudden not working with WLOC?I'm figuring that all of these problems are related to the last update that came out late last week...

Running Vista, 32 bit, all latest patches to all software.I too am having both the Windows Firewall and Malware Protection turn off sometime after it shows as being on. When I try to turn it back on, Firewall successfully turns back on, Virus protection shows as Not Compatible, and I have to additionally turn on Spyware protection. I just eradicated and reloaded OneCare, but once again Windows Security Center highlighted the same issue.Microsoft, need help here. Is your program hacked? I do not want to completely scrub my system... way too much stuff stored.

The wireless router/modem is the only other place that Vista could detect another firewall. There might be something to your comments. I too am suffering the same problems, however in my case the problem only began when i tried to load a Sygate(Nortons) alternative firewall program. The loading error'd saying i didnt have full administrator rights (d'uhhh??? - I am the sole account user of this laptop?!) only allowing me to cancel. [yes, laptop, i hear you say] - i then went in to un-install program, but because this program never properly loaded, it's not listed. Can only presume it's become a registry issue [but registry programs like PC Tools RegMechanic or Advanced Uninstaller Pro cant see it to resolve] Since then [unrelated] every time my (Sky) wi-fi router keeps losing connection ~ i have to manually keep reactivating the firewall everytime the laptop re-sees the connection, if i want to clear off the Your Firewall Is Not Connected prompt -THIS IS GETTING TIRESOME Clearly my Vista Premium believes there is another firwall program running, and turns off the Windows one - Is there somewhere which tells you what programs are running tryng to protect you as a Firewall? All i want to do is tell my laptop to keep the windows firewall switched on - why is this so difficult?! I dont want to have to completely re-install my laptop just to get this facility working :( Stephen

Further google reading, i've tried the advice of removing WindowsLive OneCare (OneCareCleanUp.exe), but that hasnt made any difference: still, after every time the laptop needs to reconnect, im still alerted my Firewall needs to be switched on

Same issue here - for about 2 weeks my One Care has been unable to open and the recurring Windows firewall always turning off by itself. WLOC & Vista not compatible blah, blah... yada, yada, yada. I'm going to restore to an earlier date and my next computer will be a Mac. MS should be getting better after 20 years rather then have unsolved compatability issues with their own security software. You have to pay $69.00 to ask them a question.

I've had this problem for 3 weeks and FINALLY FIXED THE PROBLEM!!! HERE IS HOW I FIXED IT.I am using a laptop with a hard connection and also a wireless connection, at the same time. Somehow, the wireless connection was not applying the firewall, but the hard connection was.I went into the control panel, into Network settings, and DISABLED the wireless connection. Then I restarted the computerWhen it came back up, I looked for the wireless icon on the bottom right of my monitor and clicked on it. It opened up EDIT settings for the wireless connection. I clicked on the TAB called INTERNET. The box for "Apply Firewall Setting" was not checked. SO I MADE SURE THAT BOX IS CHECKED.Then I went back into the control panel, network settings, and REENABLED the wireless connection. Then restart the computer again. WALA.... I then had my firewall back for both the hard and wireless connections.I always thought it was caused by the One Care I have in my system, since all the postings I researched seem to point to that, but they are wrong.

However, my other three computers still have WLOC installed on them, they are internet hardwired and XP OS, they seemed to still be fine.....I won't mention how some hacker stole my passwords when the firewall was disabled or how he was able to get $ 2,500 from my accounts (I'm super happy about that, I was able to get him though). It only took 4 days to get my money back....

I have a similar issue Windows Vista Home. I have an AirLink router with 2 wired XP systems and my laptop wireless with Vista Home on it. The issue has only surfaced within the last several months with the Vista system. I assumed it had somthing to do with a security patch. The world is pretty much stuck with Microsoft, but I am somewhat dissatisfied with having to do their Beta testing for them. One would think that a system that senses another firewall in the LAN and turns itself off, would be smart enough to set a flag to that event and watch to see if the other firewall goes off line before issuing constant warnings. I cannot find a way to set that preference manually. Does anyone know if that's possible?

What is the point of having a system that detects there is some other firewall but not indicating what it is or whether it's even switched on! Vista loves prompts popping up asking are you sure you want to do this - OI ! DEVELOPERS = why cant Vista do this Stephen, aka WonderWabbit
