Vista DHCP client subnet change frustration
Here is the issue: We connect to a subnet at a meeting via ethernet and get a dhcp address then move to another area and get on a different subnet. The dhcp client keeps the old subnet address and we have to manually release/renew. Is there a way to have the client release upon disconnecting the ethernet port (link down)? I have heard of a registry entry to release upon powerdown but now on loss of link.....Looking for registry tweek on client not server side.thanks in advance.Grant

Hi Grant,
With Media Sense enabled, the machine should be able to detect the link state. When Windows Vista detects that the media is disconnected and down, the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), after a damping period implemented in the stack, invalidates the parameters associated with that network. The IP address or addresses no longer allow packets to be sent, and any routes associated with the interface are invalidated. Thus, when it connects to other networks, it will request a new IP configuration.
For more information, please refer to the following websites:

Regarding this issue, I suggest performing the following steps:
1. Confirm if the NIC supports Media Sense.
2. Enable DHCP Media Sense explicitly in registry:2.1. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe), Locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters.2.2. Add the following registry entry:Name: DisableDHCPMediaSense
Data type: REG_DWORD (Boolean)
Value: 0
Hope it helps.
