Vista Cannot Obtain IP Address
Hello, Recently, I purchased new hardware with Vista Home Premium to build a new Vista system. Unfortunately, I am running into issues when trying to connect to my network using a commercial router with DHCP enabled. The router already has multiple PCs connected to it (XP and Vista) w/o any issues. For some reason Vista will not obtain an IP address. Ive gone through following troubleshooting steps but no luck: * Updated NIC drivers with latest version * Ran through hardware diagnostic apps (from Intel) comes back with OK. * Switched out cables & ports used to connect to router * Gone through the reg hack for BROADCAST flag (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233) * Updated netsh settings laid out by this article (http://blogs.technet.com/steve_lamb/archive/2007/05/01/windows-vista-won-t-connect-to-the-network-how-to-fix-the-problem-by-making-vista-less-aggressive-on-the-network.aspx) Here are the specs: Processor: Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) Motherboard: Intel DG33TL http://support.intel.com/products/motherboard/dg33tl/index.htm Router: D-Link DI-524 Rev D Latest firmware (4.03) DHCP enabled Wireless w/ WEP enabled (but not used by Vista) Any one run into the same issue? Any suggestions? Thank you, Bhavik

It looks like you have done a good job covering the basics and then some. I think the next thing I would do to isolate the problem would be to move a different Vista box to the same location and plug in the network cable. If that fixes the problem then it is not the wiring. Next I would put the NIC and drivers from the computer that did not work into the one that did work. If that fixes the problem then it is a configuration problem or other hardware issue. Are you sure that the NIC is well seated? Also you can try the NIC and drivers from the working computer on the one with problems.

I have tried plugging inthe samecable that I use for my other PCs but no luck there. NIC is built in on the board so no issues with a good seal. However, here is the best part...I reinstalled Vista 3rd time, and now my connectivity seems to befine (at least over the last few hours). The only thing I can think of is a bad install or a bad media. But twice??? I'm keeping my fingers crossed...will post if something comes up. Thank you, Bhavik

I have a theory. All computers do is count 0s and 1s. All those 0s aspire to be 1s and if one of them succeeds, something will not work. Our job is to keep all those 0s in theyre place.

Then it must be those pesky 1s. I've never trusted them.
