Vista Cannot Access an Office Document on network
Hello,I currently have a XP laptop and a Vista desktop networked through LAN. The XP laptop can access the Documents on my vista PC. In Vista i can see the XP shared folder and access things like a .JPEG. The Problem arises when i Try to access an office 2007 document on my XP laptop from my Vista Desktop. When it opens, I get "access denied, please contact your admin". I have turned off all firewalls for testing and still have problems. My assumption is that i need to add the Vista user to my security policy on my XP and have tried but it does not allow me to. Any suggestions? Thanks,Todd

Hi Todd, Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following points with you: 1. Is simple file sharing enabled on the Windows XP computer? 2. Are the Office documents and the .JPEG file stored in the same folder on the Windows XP computer? Meanwhile, please make sure that Everyone has been granted read permission on Sharing and Security of the share folder. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Yes file share is enabled. The jpg. and word documents are in the same folder. I can even put a PDF. file or any other type of file and my vista PC can access it. Just not Office documents of any kind. When i hade both PC's in XP OS everything worked fine. Anyother thoughts?

Hi Todd, Please collect the following information for further research: 1. Screenshot of the error message received when attempting to access the Office Word documents on the Windows XP machine from the Windows Vista machine. 2. Capture network packets:--------------------------1) Download NetMon3.1 from the following website and install it on both machines:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en2) Log onto the machines with the account that is a member of administrators group and launch NetMon3.1. For Windows Vista, please right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.1.3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click Create a new capture tab4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon.Note. Please start NetMon on both machines.6) On the Windows Vista machine, reproduce the issue by performing the following step:Click Start, type \\<IP address of the Windows XP machine>\<share folder>\<the Word Document> and press Enter.7) After the issue occurs, access the .jpg file by performing the following step from the Windows Vista machine:Click Start, type \\<IP address of the Windows XP machine>\<share folder>\<the .jpg file> and press Enter.8) After the file is open, go back to the Netmon window and press F11 to stop the Netmon on both machines.9) Press Ctrl+S to save the netmon files.10) After that, please upload the files to the following space:https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=0e6bd976-8b22-4d6c-873d-e80e69e9d87bPassword: 2#J[3k[BL5c2 I look forward to your reply. HelloI have a similar problem. I have two Vista machines, one a laptop and the other a desktop. I usually use the desktop to access files on the laptop over the network. The profiles I use on the two computers are the same name and have the same passwords. The profiles are of administrator level. Anyway this has been working fine until I decided to clone the desktop hard drive to a bigger one. The cloning was successful and everything else works fine except for Office. I can successfully connect to my laptop and have access to files. I can also open PDFs and JPGs on the laptop from the desktop. On trying to open a Word document on the laptop from the desktop, first the message "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable." shows; then another message "Windows cannot find 'Filename'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." shows. This is despite trying to open the document by double-clicking it in a explorer browser. In the case of an Excel document the error message is simply "Could not open 'Filename'.". However if the document is copied over to the desktop, Office opens it successfully. For the first clone I used DriveClone cloning software. Thinking that maybe the problem was with the cloning software, I tried the cloning again, this time using Norton Ghost 9.0. The result was exactly the same. I also uninstalled Office and re-installed it, but it didn't make a difference. Going back to the original hard drive, Office and eveything else is working fine. I'm trying to avoid having to install Windows ( and the numerous applications and settings) all over again in the bigger hard drive. So I will appreciate if you can help me on this.Thank youAsibong
