Vista ARP, DHCP, zeroconf
Greetings,I have several issues I want to ask about. All are associated with network management by Windows Vista. These are the problems I have encountered as a network administrator.Environment:Linux servers (DHCP, DNS, etc.)Switched network (Cisco 2960)Linux, Windows XP, Windows Vista clientsIssues:1) Despite having configured to use DHCP for a network connection, Vista sets a zeroconf address (169.254.0.0/16) and starts sending packets during boot. After some time it resets interface's address using DHCP. What is more, it sometimes sends packets from a zeroconf address during a DHCP negotiation in progress.2) Vista sends ARPs to servers in another subnet (DNS servers). As far as I know, it should send only one ARP to get the gateway's MAC address.3) It floods the network with broadcast packets, especially ARP. It often sends tens of ARPs per second to one host. This seems to have been reported: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3777106&SiteID=17Does anyone have a reason for these strange actions taken by the OS?Does anyone know about bugfixes coming out?

I don't have answers for your issues, but I recently found an article that addresses the constant broadcast floods that Vista puts out. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm pretty aggravated about all the uneccesary traffic so I will be.http://thedaneshproject.com/posts/vista-not-working-with-dhcp/This may give you some insight.rayk
