Vista / W2K File Sharing
I have a new Vista machine that is a new member of a W2K peer network. Both Vista and W2K machines can see each others shared drives. From any W2K machine, I can browse any shared drive on the Vista machine without entering a user name and password. However, From the Vista machine, I can only browse shared drives on the W2K machines after entering a valid user name and password (of the W2K machine). I tried enabling the guest account on the W2K machine but no joy. What am I missing?

fanfarenj, Thanks for the links. I review both threads and confirmed my settings. However, the same problem still exists. I have connectivity, just forced to supply a uid and pw from Vista in order to gain access to any W2K machine. John

Hi Baron826, Thank you for the post. I perform lots of tests regarding your problem description and found that on the Windows Vista machine I can access the Windows 2000 machine with Guest account without entering a user name and password. Regarding the issue, please check if Guest has been granted appropriate permission on the Windows 2000 machine. If it is not a permission issue, please capture the network packets using the following steps for further research: 1. Please download NetMon3.1 from the following website and install it on both machines:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en 2. Log onto the machines with the account that is a member of administrators group and launch NetMon3.1. For Windows Vista, please right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.1. 3. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click Create a new capture tab 4. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. 5. After that, press F10 to start NetMon.Note. Please start NetMon on both machines. 6. On the Windows Vista machine, reproduce the issue by performing the following step:Click Start, type \\<IP address of the Windows 2000 machine>\<share folder> and press Enter. 7. Once the issue occurs, go back to the Netmon window and press F11 to stop the Netmon on both machines. 8. Press Ctrl+S to save the netmon files. 9. After that, please upload the files to the following space:https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=40a4cbaa-32ff-414a-85b5-fc6f10db37fa Password: U)sQ^5]yeKRi!Er Note: Please let me know the IP address of the both machines and the user name used to log on the Windows Vista machine and access the share folder. Please post a quick note in the current thread to inform me after uploading the information. In addition, you may submit the issue to our Windows 2000 Newsgroup since the engineers there are more familiar with issues occurring in Windows 2000: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.win2000.networking&cat=en_us_e3863694-e772-46a0-9e90-11d2332a0bc4&lang=en&cr=us Thanks. Hi Joson, Thanks for the detailed information and your willingness to help. I checked the Guest account properties on a W2K machine again. On the "Members Of" tab, I have Guest and Users (groups). With these permissions, I am NOT able to browse the shared folders on the W2K machine from Vista without entering a (W2K) uid and pw. Note that I also tried adding Administrator permissions to Guest without success and subsequently removed it from Guest. Am I missing anything with these permissions on Guest? Also note that after downloading NM 3.1 and attempting to install it on the W2K machine, I received a message indicating that it required XP in order to install and run. Is this the correct link? Thanks, John
January 8th, 2008 11:26pm

Hi John, Thank you for your response. 1. It is unnecessary to add Guest to be the member of Users group. I suggest restoring it to the default setting first. 2. Regarding the permission setting, we simply need to make sure that everyone is granted the full control permission for the share folder (it is the default setting). 3. We can start NM3.1 on the Windows Vista machine to capture the network packets first. I look forward to your reply. Have a nice day. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi Joson, Thanks for the additional information. I have captured the network log from the Vista machine as you suggested and uploaded it to the link you previously provided. Note the following machine names in the log: Vista = 531s W2K = HP500 I look forward to your response. Thanks, John

Hi John, I have checked the Netmon file. First, I would like to confirm the following points with you: 1. Is the IP address of the HP500 (Windows 2000) computer 192.168.0.110? 2. Is the user account used to logon the Windows Vista computer John Roth? From the Netmon file, I notice that the error message is: STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE. Please check if there is user account (named John Roth) existing on the Windows 2000 computer with a password different from the one on the Vista machine. If so, please reset the same password for them to check the result. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Joson, Thanks for the additional information. My reply to your questions are below: 1. Is the IP address of the HP500 (Windows 2000) computer 192.168.0.110? Yes 2. Is the user account used to logon the Windows Vista computer John Roth? Yes. Both Vista and W2K machines have John Roth as a user and have the same PW. As mentioned previously, I currently must use this UID and PW to browse shared froldes on the W2K machine from Vista. Currently, I do not receive any logon falure message during this process. I have captured and uploaded another netmon file for your reference. The Vista machine's IP ends in .105 and the W2K machines IP ends in .110. Hope this helps. Thanks, John

On my Vista / W2K hookup, neither can see the shared folders on the other, But on W2K , if I know the share name and use the raw IP address for the Map Network Drive, then W2K maps the Vista folder just fine. Vista cannot ping the W2K machine. I entered a Windows firewall exception to allow ICMP echo Responses, but it does no good. Even with the Firewall turned off, Vista still cannot ping W2K . But W2K can ping Vista.

fanfarenj, After a quick test, I found I could not ping either way. However, both machines can see each other in explorer and can map network drives. From the Vista machine however, the W2K uid and pw must be entered. This is the issue I am trying to solve. Not sure why ping doesn't work in a cmd dialog box. From a run dialog, I can enter \\{ip}\{share name} and connect. But again, From the Vista machine, the W2K uid and pw must be entered. From W2K,\\{ip}\{share name} works fine. John

Also, on my Vista / W2K hookup ( see post above ) when I look at Network and Sharing Center->View computers and devices Vista shows two Network Locations,Vista on the Named LAN (expected)and W2K on a second "unspecified" LAN (not expected). Both machines are on ethernet ports of my Linksys router, and normal internet access works for both. If anyone can explain what causes this, please do .. Thanks.

Hi John, Thank you for the time and effort you've invested on this issue. I have checked the Netmon file and performed a lot of tests accordingly. Unfortunately, I cannot find out the culprit from the Netmon file. In this case, lets check the value of the registry entry LmCompatibilityLevel on both Windows Vista and Windows 2000 computers: 1. On both computers, open Registry Editor (regedit.exe). 2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa. 3. Please check the value of the registry entry LmCompatibilityLevel. If the value is not the default one listed below, please correct it. The default value: Windows Vista: 0x00000003 Windows 2000: 0x00000000 4. After that, please access the share folder and let me know the result. In addition, I suggest creating another user account on the both computers with the same password and check the result. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi Joson, Thanks for the information. I verified that the LmCompatibilityLevel were the default values (above). No changes were required. Also, an identical uid and pw already existed on the Vista and W2K machines. However, the issue still persists. Thanks for your help, John

Hi John, I appreciate the time and effort you invested on this issue. From the Netmon file you provided, I noticed that you still logged onto the Windows Vista machine with John Roth. Have you created the account X which you typed in the logon box for accessing the share folder on the Windows Vista machine? If so, please log onto the Windows Vista machine with the account X and try to access the share folder to check the result. If not, please create the account on the Windows Vista machine and make sure that its password is the same as the one in the Windows 2000 machine. Sorry for anything unclear in my previous posts. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support
January 23rd, 2008 11:22am

Joson, Thanks for the information. SUCCESS! After doing some additional testing, I found that the solution is as follows: 1) If the W2K user logged in using a password, Vista will challange for that uid and pw while browsing the network. 2) If the W2K user logged in NOT using a password, Vista will NOT challange for the uid and pw (of the W2K machine) while browsing the network. 3) Using different accounts on different machines appear to have no bearing on the Vista uid / pw challange. 4) Regardless of whether the W2K user logged in using a password or not, any other W2K machine could browse the network of any W2K machine without a uid / pw challange. 5) Enabling / disabling the guest account on the W2K machinesappears to have no bearing on the Vista udi / pw challange. Thanks for all your help, John
