Virtual WiFi Miniport over ICS LAN
Anybody played with this new virtual hotspot funktionality?
What does work: Connect a client to the Virtual WiFi Miniport and access
the Internet through ICS running on the Wireless network Connection Atheros
AR5007EG. In this case all is working perfect. I can reach the Internet as
well as some local servers from the client.
What does not work: Now I want to use the Internet from my RJ45 LAN
provided by the Broadcom NIC. I’ve just changed the ICS away from the
Atheros and put it on the Broadcom. I can access the local servers on the
LAN as before but can not get through the gateway out to the Internet. The
client’s browser just says “Internet connection timed out” (turning the
Win7 firewall off does not help). From the LAN I can ping the client and
from the client I can ping the Router but not anything on the Internet.
Anybody got this working over a build in NIC? Thanks for any reply.

Hi Nick,
Thank you for the links. Very useful. From what I understand: There should be no restriction to use ICS on LAN NIC. ICS is running in "Full Mode" means the client gets an IP out of the 192.168.137.0/24 range. The SYN packet generated to initialize the TCP connection looks different (TTL 68 instead of 128, Win=48180 instead of 8192). It arrives at the router but never got the SYN/ACK back. Very strange. Maybe its a issue in the Broadcom or Atheros driver - I don´t know.
My workaround: I´m using a local proxy (privoxy) as a middleman. My client (Symbian phone) let me specify a proxy/port to connect to. This is a very nice new feature in Win7.
