Viewing Windows XP files in Windows 7
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a dual boot with Window XP Pro SP3. The other day, while in Windows 7, I went to access the Documents and Settings folder for my administrator account in Windows XP (my primary user) and Windows 7 told me I didn't have permission to access, but that I could click continue to gain access, which I did, and was shortly able to open this folder. I then booted into Windows XP and viewed the Security tab for my administrator account. I see now that there is an "Account Unknown" user listed there. I am assuming this is the Windows 7 user I created to gain permissions to view this folder, but can anyone confirm that? Also, assuming it is connected to Windows 7, if and when I do remove Windows 7 RC, will this account automatically remove itself, or will I have to do that manually?

hmm the permissions for the said folder may have been overwritten by windows 7. i doubt windows 7 will remove the ownership automatically when you remove it.There may still be issues with regards to the compatibility of ownerships between the two OS's. You may have to go through the settings in windows xp itself to bring that back...

For best results, it might be best to configure the folder and all contents to be owned, with full control, by Administrators, or even Everyone. These generic groups use standard SIDs and should be recognized the same by both operating systems. After you configure it to be owned by a standard group, you can remove the users that are unknown by one or the other OS.

If you access a computer from network, the access must log on the computer with an effective certificate of the system on that computer. Therefore, when you access the Windows XP computer from the Windows 7 RC computer, it will log on the computer with a certificate of the Windows XP system, and all the network tasks will be done by the certificated account of the Windows XP system. It is not possible that a Windows 7 account gets permissions for the files on the Windows XP computer. What is the version of the Windows XP system, Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?Arthur Xie - MSFT
