I had the same problem ... I copied svchost.exe from the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 directory (14 KB - I'm using WinXPSP3)
to my C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory (as I recall, I did Start->Run->cmd and explicitly used the "copy" command). I then rebooted the
machine. [This worked for me ... ymmv but it's worth a try]

Try to use system restore. It is suspect thing that McAfee will NOT do such thing unless it detect as Virus. Also contact McAfee support for help.

seriously, dude, try copy'ing that file ... the svchost.exe wasn't a suspect file -- it was just a
monumental mistake by mcafee. i, too, had system restore turned off and couldn't restore
back to before the disaster struck. i copy'ed the svchost.exe file back in, rebooted, got back
on the 'net and d/l'ed the *new* mcafee definitions file, ran a full scan and all was well.
(btw, after that, i turned system restore back on so i'd have a restore point in case of a
future disaster). mcafee never said that the svchost.exe file was suspect - just that their
bogus virus definition got out into the wild and wreaked havoc on the world. funny that it
only affected XPSP3, huh?
