VPN woes! I have a VPN issue that requires expert help! VPN simply won't work when Windows Firewall is turned on. Help Please!
Thanks for looking! Windows 7 professional, 32 bit sp1- fully updatedUsing GUI vpn interfaceI have set the connection to PPTPI have opened port 1723 on local for both TCP and UDPI have GRE enabled on port 47Trend micro Internet security2 other machines in office on exact same Hardware build and Win 7 version (Dell dimensions) work perfectly with the VPNAdditionally two newer machines, also on windows 7 pro sp1 with trend micro and also dell work perfectly on the same VPNAll 5 machines share the same router and internet connection. The server address provided to me is not an IP but reads like this "vpn.businessname.com" which again is working fine on 4 other machinesWe also use the "Domain" option and fill in the company domain we are connecting to in the space provided in gui vpn configIt's just one pesky machine. I am beginning to suspect that windows firewall is damaged on that machine.YES I have tested his vpn login on other machines and it works fine. NO I cannot log in as a different user on his machine.I CAN make the vpn work on this pesky machine by shutting down windows firewall. If I turn on ANY part of the windows firewall (public or private) the VPN will not establish connection with error 800If I turn the Firewall off, it connects as normal, and can open a virtual session and commences to work properly.I have compared all the settings to the other machines at least three times. I have reset windows firewall on that machine, which seemed to do nothing.. all my rules were still there. I have carefully removed and re-added the firewall rules from scratch. I even tried a different profile on the local machine.Additionally, I can connect to the same VPN with NO FIREWALL EXCEPTIONS on some machines, and on others I must use exceptions, which drives me nuts. Is there any way to track where and how windows firewall is shutting me down and bypass it? This is a bit ridiculous.. we are using the simplest VPN possible and Microsoft tech.. why is it blocking other Microsoft tech... My client was losing money over this, and now I had no choice but to disable windows firewall on that machine until I get a solution... they have to be able to place orders. Any ideas?

Hi, To make issue clearly, please let us know the following: 1. Have you tried the built-in VPN client for a test? 2. Please check if there is more detailed error information in Event Viewer. Also, you can try to disable Trend software and test the issue in Clean Boot to check the result. 1; That's what I meant by windows GUI client.. did I miss-use the term. We create connection through internet options screen. 2; I will check event viewer and post what I find. 3; Trend Micro is not blocking the VPN as far as I can tell, seems to make no difference either way. 4; Recently: same computer wont connect, so i have to switch on or off windows firewall. That's right: if its on, turn it off, bam! we connect. If its OFF I have to TURN IT ON.. then my end user can connect. I will be the first to admit that I am out of my depth here. This vpn issue was presented to me after a merger with another company. They apparently don't have a network admin working on the server currently, but another over-worked IT guy who specializes in Database stuff, and is just winging it. The problem does not appear to be logical. Since the other office computers connect and use the same configurations and hardware, it comes down to some sort of issue with that computer. I have an older (better maintained and configured) PC that connects LIGHTNING fast to the vpn from home. I can easily verify that his account is good, and logs in. 5; Is it possible that some previous software DAMAGED a critical windows file? This computer had a ISP security agent which seemed to cause some problems when I removed it. I was able to reconnect up the network drives and shared database resources, but this vpn never worked right on this PC. 6; I it possible to rebuild windows firewall without rebuilding the OS? 7; Any suggestions for a free firewall to super-cede windows firewall on the local machine which is KNOWN to work well with VPN's?
