VPN to Office and Temporary Profile
Hi everyone, My office has set up a VPN for its employees. For the last year I've been able to connect on Vista with the Cisco client that was provided to me by the network guys.I just got a new work laptop with Windows 7 x64 installed - a network tech set it up for me. Supposedly, the Cisco client won't work so I was told to install Shrew VPN client. This worked - I can connect to the office VPN.The problem is that I'm offsite now with my new laptop and when I log in with my domain account, Windows creates a "temporary profile", presumably because I haven't logged into the computer yet while on the domain. Logging off deletes everything I do - all files and settings are gone. The Shrew VPN connection shuts off too. I've even tried connecting to the VPN on the local admin account, switching to my domain user account with the VPN still connected, but it doesn't work - Windows still creates a temp profile. What I'd really like is to forget about the Cisco and Shrew clients and just use the built-in VPN client feature of Windows 7. I've wanted to do the same with Vista in the past, but I was repeatedly told by the network team that it's not possible or, at least, they don't know how.So I'm finally asking for outside assistance. With my very limited knowledge of the office network infrastructure, and networking in general for that matter, does anybody think they can offer some assistance? My ultimate goal is to log in to my computer with a real profile, not a temporary one. My secondary goal is to connect to the office VPN without any third-party software.I have the Cisco .pcf file that was provided to me. And when I import it into Shrew I can see some of the settings. I've tried many different combinations of settings, but I just can't create a new VPN connection in Windows 7 that actually works. I'd be happy to answer any questions that you have, within reason of course - I'll try not to divulge any office secrets :)Thanks in advance for your time, Davehttp://davesexton.com/blog

As for the built-in Windows VPN abilities, your company must have the compatible hardware and sever software. Since they're using Cisco software, I'd be they don't have the required set up. Microsoft is trying to move companies to their new "Windows Direct Access" which is similar to VPN, but more integrated and less of a pain. As for the temporary profile part, I'm going to leave that to a more knowledgeable forum visitor to help. not exactly helpful :(

Hi Dave, May I know if you are using a roaming profile? If so, please check if you can access the share folder which stores the profiles and some other resources via VPN. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
