VPN set up on Vista Home Premium - Dial up only???
I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have been trying to set up VPN on it for a few days now. With it connected to my n/w (home or at work), EVERY time I create a new VPN connection, instead of it running via the nic, it sets up to run as dial up (fax/modem) and wont let me change it. I don't even select the fax/modem (who wants to run at 56K??). I've tried both wire and wireless with the same results. Has anyone else run across this problem? Preferably with a fix for it? I even contacted the laptop's maker (HP) via both phone and online and "they are not trained in VPN setups". I hope to find some help here, there's got to be someone heresmarter the those at HP.

Need a little more information, but if you're going through the wizard and you're selecting the 'Through the Internet..' on the 'How do you Connect' page, i would double check your Internet Connections settings,i.e Never dial.., Dial Whenever.., Alway dial... I am referring to the options on the Connection tab through Internet Options.

It was set at "dial whenever..", but even if I just tell it to create the connection only it still creates it as a dial up even though I select the ethernet connection.

I am having exactly the same problem with Vista Business. No matter what I do, it wants to setup VPN on my modem. If I disable the modem, then it indicates "device missing". Did you ever get a solution to this?

Any solutions yet? I use Windows XP, have tried all of the above, but to no avail. Similarly, when I create a new connection and select via internet, the new connect insists on wanting to dial up using the modem. Disabling the modem did not help - like GRS-ITGuy, the message displayed is "device missing". This is very frustrating - even our IT person has yet to resolve this.

Hi Perfessor, Would you show me your steps and more information for your environment? How does this machine connect to Internet? How does this machine VPN to the workplace, through Internet or Intranet? Did you choose Connect to a workplace option in Set up a connection or network wizard when you created VPN connection?

Since I have exactly the same problem I describe my environment and my steps here: Choose "Set up connection or network" from the Network and sharing centre Select "connect to a workplace" from the upcoming list (Choose a connection option) Select "Use my Internet Connection (VPN)" and NOT "Dial directly" in the next step Typing in the target DNS Name without selecting further options. Typing in my credentials on the next wizzard page and click on "connect" Results in "The wizzard cannot connect" page. Whe I choose "Se up the connection anyway" I end up with a new DIAL UP Network connection where the host name is inserted in the phone number field :-/ My Environment: Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard Model HP Compaq tc4200 (PV984AW#ABD) Total amount of system memory 1,49 GB RAM System type 32-bit operating system Number of processor cores 1 64-bit capable No Storage Total size of hard disk(s) 149 GB Disk partition (C 14 GB Free (149 GB Total) Graphics Display adapter type Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family Total available graphics memory Not detected Dedicated graphics memory 0 MB Dedicated system memory 0 MB Shared system memory 0 MB Display adapter driver version 6.14.10.4764 Primary monitor resolution 1024x768 DirectX version DirectX 9.0 or better Network Network Adapter Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection Network Adapter Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter

I think issue number 3 is probably your issue.http://blogs.technet.com/rrasblog/archive/2007/04/08/troubleshooting-vista-vpn-problems.aspx 3. VPN Client connections created on Windows Vista show up as Dial-up connections Some people have been facing this issue in their Windows Vista VPN client installations. When a VPN client connection is created using the 'Get Connected wizard' or rasphone.exe, it shows up as a 'Dial-up connection' in the network connections folder. When youright click on the client connection created, click on Properties, it says 'Connect using Modem (removed)' This might happen if the virtual WAN miniports for PPTP/L2TP are not installed. Also, these miniports might be uninstalled after installation due to one of the below several reasons: 3rd party VPN adapter or software install/uninstall 3rd party firewall software install/uninstall. System backup that didnt restore properly. Corrupted or missing bindings. Manual or 3rd party software's improperly manipulation of registry values in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. You can verify if this is the issueby following the below steps: a.Open Device Manager (Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc) b. Click on 'View' in the toolbar and select 'Show hidden devices' c. Expand the machine name node. d. Under 'Network Adapters' node, see if WAN Miniport (PPTP) and WAN Miniport (L2TP) are present. If they are not present then you are facing the issue mentioned above and you need to follow the resolution steps specified below. Resolution The resolution is to uninstall and install the miniports manually. Steps to follow for resolution Type the following commands in order from an elevated command prompt on the Windows Vista client. Netcfg u MS_PPTP Netcfg u MS_L2TP Netcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf c p i MS_PPTP Netcfg l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf c p i MS_L2TP

Vista Home Premium doesn't support VPN, this isn't very clear on USA comparison site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx But is more clear on the Microsoft Australian Site: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/default.mspx I'd take it back and complain if it's a retail version, if it's an OEM version then you will need to upgrade. Cheers JR

I had to reinstall vista, then upgraded to SP1 before I did anything. VPN is working again. it was a pain. I backed up everything and did it. I have been working fine since then.

Here is how I fixed this on WinXP Pro SP3. Thread from daniweb.com http://www.daniweb.com/forums/post1111975.html#post1111975 Originally Posted by benyoka View Post Hi! This is how to do it: 1. In the DeviceID column, you can see the installable devices. 5. Run this command to install the WAN Miniport (PPTP): devcon.exe install c:\windows\inf\netrasa.inf MS_PptpMiniport 6. You can install the other devices similarly. I think you will need MS_L2tpMiniport, MS_PtiMiniport, MS_NdisWanIp, MS_PppoeMiniport additionally Best Regards Bence Benyoka, thanks so much! Your steps 5 & 6 (plus one step below) were critical in fixing my problem on WinXP Pro SP3. In addition to Benyoka's steps 5 & 6 (and rebooting), I had to perform one more step to get mine working. At a command prompt, type the following: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt After this and rebooting again, my problem is fixed! Thanks!! WP
