VPN fails to connect in Windows 7
I am able to VPN into my work where it verifies my logon with the domain. I am unable to connect to another network that doesn't require the domain. I have tried using virtual XP to connect, but that fails also. The connection just keeps saying verifying name and password. If I boot up my machine to my XP hard drive, I can connect with no problem IS there something new in Windows 7 that is stopping this connection?

Hi,You mentioned that "I am unable to connect to another network that doesn't require the domain". Can you describe the symptom in more details? Do you mean that another VPN server is not a domain server? Is there any error message/event on the client and the VPN server?

The other VPN just doesn't require a domain name in the connection. It does require a secure password, but not data encryption. I have tried every possible way to connect in Windows 7, with no success. I wasn't sure if Windows 7 had some other security setting that I needed to disable or adjust. As stated before, I have no issues connecting on my XP Pro machines, with the same settings.

According to the symptom, it's hard to say what the root cause is. I would suggest you to compare the connection configuration on Win7 and the hardware XP computer.Does the Win7 and the hardware XP computer in the same domain? To find the root cause we may need to enable the ras tracing and collect network trace on the win7 and the VPN server. You may follow the steps below:a. start network monitor tool on the server and the client. You can download netowrk monitor tool from the following link:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062fb. Run the following command on the server and the client to enable ras tracing:netsh ras set tracing * enabled c. On the Win7 client, try to establish VPN connection to the VPN server.d. After the issue occurs, run the following command to disable ras tracing:netsh ras set tracing * disabledNOTE: You can find the tracing filesat %systemroot%\tracing folder.e. Stop network monitor tool to save the two network trace files. Then you can check the network trace and ras tracing to see if there is a clue. For your reference, I am inlcuding a related article below:Routing and Remote Accesshttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/network/bb545655.aspx

I do not have the ability to run the tracing program on the server I am trying to connect to. I am also unable to contact the IT administrator for that computer as he is out of town. I will try to be more specific in my problem . I have loaded the Windows 7 RC on a separate drive and changed the boot order to use it. I still have my XP Pro on drive C, but boot to drive E where Win 7 is. If I use my XP drive I can connect to my secured office VPN and the VPN located at a another company with no problems. If I try to boot the same two VPN's in Windows 7 RC, I can connect to my secure office with no problem, but not the other companies VPN. Although I noticed there are many more options in Win 7, I tried numerous ways to connect, but no luck. The connection displays connecting and verifying user name / password, then goes to connecting to Wan Mini port SSTP, then back to verifying user name / password, and so on, but never connects. I can't believe I am the only one having this problem. I have all the lates updates for WIN & and all my devices. Hope you have another suggestion.

Microsoft abandoned a number of encryption algoritms for VPN connections with the introduction of Windows Vista. In Windows Vista those encryption algoritms could be re-enabled with a registry key. You can try if this still works in Windows 7.Create and set the following registry value:HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rasman\ParametersName: AllowPPTPWeakCryptoValue: 1 (DWORD)I hope this helps.Ray

Unfortunately it did not work. I failed to mention that I also tried making the connection within Windows 7, using the virtual XP mode. Hope someone else has a suggestion. Thanks for trying.
