VPN connections don't work
Trying to create two VPN connections to two different customer's networks. Both VPN connections work fine in Windows XP Professional (have for some time), so I know the user name/password is correct and that it's not a firmware update issue for either one's router. When I try to create VPN connections to these same two customers in Windows 7 Ultimate, I get either error 629 or 800 depending on the various settings I try/change to.Any ideas?

Can you telnet to the vpn port number?this should indicate if there is possibly a firewall issue

When I try to telnet from either the XP Pro machine (where VPN clients work) or from the Windows 7 Ulitimate machine, I get the same error. It may be due to error on my part, I'm not sure. When from either PC, I type (in a DOS command shell window) C:>Telnet "IP address" - I get a "could not open connection to the host, on port 23: connection failed". If I type C:>Telnet "IP address" 1723 - I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor, like as if it connected but no prompt for login credentials. Eventually, if I type "exit", I get the command prompt back. Any suggestions? Or am I doing something wrong in Telnet?

the blinking cursor mean that the port is open and listening so that possibly rules out a firewall issue... however you may need to allow that port inbound on your firewallAre you using a firewall if so which one, try disabling that and then see what happenslet me know

Both my XP Pro & Win7 Ultimate boxes are going through my Windows 2003 Small Business Server and then an AT&T DSL modem/router/firewall to get to the Internet. Since my Windows XP Pro box has always been able to connect this way, I think that it is safe to rule out the Win2k3 Small Business Server and the AT&T DSL modem/router/firewall behind it as the issue, unless there is a port discrepency between using VPN on the two different O/S's. I don't think that is the case though, since I never had to open a port on the router or SBS2003 server to get XP to work. Plus I have to believe/hope that the port utilized is still the same since if it wasn't then every company's VPN access would only work with XP or Win7 depending on the "receiving" port they set their VPN system up to monitor incoming connection attempts on.So the only other firewall that could be a problem is the Windows Firewall on the Win7 Ultimate box. So on the Win7 Ultimate box, I configured inbound and outbound rules both that opened up ports 23 & 1723. I then attempted to utilize the VPN connection and the Win7 Ultimate box returns an "error 629: the connection was closed by the remote computer". I have to believe that it is something in the VPN settings that is different between Windows XP and Windows 7 but since their configuration screens and options are different, I can't just settle for making their settings identical between the two PC's.

Already unchecked. Would you like to see screen shots of the two (XP & Win7's) VPN connection settings/properties (minus the passwords of course)?

How do I attach a zip file to this forum? Or how else can I get you the screen shots?

I have a similar problem on a W7 laptop. I set up and used Hamachi and it "just works". I don't understand either.

I have a recently reloaded Dell OptiPlex 8300 running Windows XP Home (SP3 and all Microsoft critical & recommended updates applied). I ran the "Network Connection" wizard on it, selected "connect to my workplace" and then "VPN" and, while accepting all other default selections and settings, I input the customer's IP address and login credentials it worked.
