I am having similar difficulties. I have an XP sp3 VPN server located behind my firewall with the correct port forwarded to it to allow incoming VPN requests. I am able to establish VPN connectionsfrom other XP machines with no trouble. However when I try to establish a VPN using a Vista 32Buisnessmachine it hangs and gets stuck on the "Verifying Username and Password" screen and then times out. It looks like Vista is no good at establishing this basic kind of VPN. Is this a new Vista 'feature' or a bug? It also looks like this has been a known issue for quite a while. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1250945&SiteID=17

Hi, Are you using the third party VPN client to establish the VPN connection? If SP1 has not been installed, please install the Windows Vista SP1 or the hotfix 935945 on the Windows Vista machine and check the result: The packets that are sent to the local computer are dropped after you establish a VPN connection by using a third-party VPN adapter on a Windows Vista-based computer http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;935945 Hope it helps.
