VPN Problems
I have a SBS 2003 server at work. To this I have several machines that connect successfully to a VPN that was set up by SBS.I have a Dell M1530 laptop that cannot connect to the VPN. It seems like it wants to connect via a dialup connection but the computer does not hhave a modem so it can't. I've downloaded the connection manager and have also tried to set up the connection manually. Each time I get the same message when I try to connect using the CONNECT TO A NETWORK dialog box (clicking on the network icon on the right in the tray and selecting CONNECT OR DISCONNET). The error is: This connection is not available because there is a problem with your modem or network adapter. Right where the wireless signal strength indicator would be there is a red "x".When I set up the connection manually, of course I don;t tell it to use dial up...Using Vista Ultimate. Updated all the drivers, still nothing. Vista up to date.any help appreciated.

Hi, This behavior can be caused by the security programs. The anti-virus and firewall may block the connection to VPN server. I suggest that you temporary disable the programs and try to connect to VPN again. If the issue persists, the root cause may be the wireless adapter driver. I suggest that you remove that driver, download and install the latest driver manually. 1. Click Start. In the Start Search box type "devmgmt.msc" and press Enter. 2. Expand "Network Adapters", double-click on the entry of the wireless network device. 3. Click the tab "Driver", click "Uninstall". 4. Click Start. In the Start Search box type "appwiz.cpl" and press Enter. 5. Remove the entries related to the wireless network adapter. Then, download the latest adapter driver from the following website. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=XPS_M1530&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid= Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. Additionally, I recommend that you do not use any connection programs. Please create the VPN connection and try to connect it directly with the wizard in Windows Vista. If the issue still occurs, please collect the network tracing log. Execute the following from elevated command prompt on both computer(the one works and the one fails). 1. Run "netsh ras set tr * en" (without quotes). This enables logging. 2. Try to connect to VPN and wait for the issue occurs. 3. Run "netsh ras set tr * di" (without quotes). This disables logging. This will generate log files in the %windir%\tracing directory. Please try to upload this log in the Public folder in the SkyDrive of your Live Space, give us privilege for reading the log, and let us know the address. http://skydrive.live.com/Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hey, I have already updated all the dirvers, with no luck. Firewalls also turned offf. I must stress that the connection immediately shows up as unavailable. I can;t even click on it to connect, that is greyed out.I have screenshots of what I see in the connect to a network window and network connections. http://cid-e7ba471854441593.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public?uc=1Nothing came up on the log since I could not actually start anything.

Hi, I have checked the screenshots in your Live Space, and find that the connection you tried to connect to the VPN is a dial-up connection, but not a VPN connection as it should be. Is it created by any programs or created manually? I suggest that you manually create the VPN connection again. Yes, oyu are right, That's what I said in the beginning. I set up the connection manually and nowhere did I tell it to use dial up. JUst followed the direction that you gave me (have done this 5-6 time before and the same thing occured.)I tried to generate the log file fo the connection attempt after creating the connection, but nothing is in the tracing folder. HHow do I elevate the command prompt? I did do this from a full administrator.

Hi Colin, We should note that when setup the VPN connection, do not choose "Dial directly", but select Use my "Internet connection". Otherwise, it will try to find the modem and dial-up when you connect to the VPN. From the screenshot I find that the connection DLG is recognized as a dial-up connection. Please try to re-connect again. If the issue persists, the wizard may be corrupt. We may need to repair the system by In-place Upgrade.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi, Obviously the created VPN connection is the same with any dial-up connection. It seems that the wizard is messed. Did you install any third party VPN connection programs? If so, I suggest that you remove them. If the issue persists, I suggest that you create a new user account, and check if the issue persists in the new profile. Create a new user account ==================== 1. Click the Start Button, and then click Control Panel. 2. Click Classic View in left panel. 3. Double-click User Accounts. 4. Click Manage another use account. 5. Click Create a new account, and type the name. 6. Choose account type as Computer administrator. 7. Click Create Account. 8. Log off and log on with the new account. If the issue persists in the new profile, I suggest that you boot in Clean Boot Mode, and create the VPN connection in Clean Boot Mode. Clean boot ================= Lets disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
