VPN Not Working
I know many things have been posted about VPN but I can't get anything to work for me so I'm looking for personalized help. So I set up a VPN via windows built in VPN and thats up and running fine and I forwarded 1723 and when I connect through my laptop from school or my MotoX over 4G it shows a user has connected. however when you click on status it shows no packets sent or received and after about 15 seconds or so it quits showing a device connected and then about another 15 seconds my laptop or phone will disconnect. I could maybe get it to work at school for maybe 4 seconds and then things stopped loading. Also when connecting through windows it disables my local internet which I see is a problem with 8 and I tried to download a hotfix but the url just loads indefinitely. Everybody on the internet keeps saying to disable use default gateway on remote network but when I do that it says I'm connected to the VPN but acts as I'm not and doesn't break my local connection. I don't know what else to try other than dual booting windows 7 since everybody says this works perfect on windows 7 but I would really prefer not to have to do that.

Hi,

What's the system as your VPN Server? Is it in domain or workgroup?

Based on my understanding, your VPN client is your Windows 8 laptop or phone (MotoX), right?

If there is another user connection, you will see it under network connection page of the VPN Server side (if it's Windows system).

If it's possible, I suggest you take a Windows 7 client in the same network to create the same VPN to that VPN Server to see if the issue produce.

If yes, it should be the network issue, change VPN client to another network environment for test.

Alternative, reset your router for test.

Sorry for not clarifying. My desktop on 8.1 Pro is running the VPN and I'm connecting through my laptop and phone. And are you asking to me to connect to my VPN from windows 7 or setup the VPN on windows 7 and connect to it via windows 7?

I just ran the VPN from Windows 7 in a virtual machine and I'm still having the same problems. I now just tried connecting to the 8.1 VPN from windows 7 and it still does the same. Now I tried connecting windows 7 to the server running in the Windows 7 virtual machine and still disconnects after 20 seconds, BUT, when connecting to the virtual machine from 7 it does show packets being sent and recieved which Windows 8.1 will not.

Hello... are you there...? Is it me yourrrrr looking for...?

Hi,

Could you give answer of those question?

1. domain or workgroup?

2. desktop is Windows 8.1 pro, What's the Operating System of your laptop?

Since your reply is confusing, please delete all your created VPN, and let's make clear:

You want to connect that Windows 8.1 desktop computer from Windows 7 laptop, right?

If, yes, follow these steps:

1. Create outgoing VPN connection in Windows 7 laptop as this guide:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/927884af-d0bc-40fb-9233-612901bcfa2f/how-to-setup-incoming-vpn-connection-in-windows-7

2. Create incoming VPN connection in Windows 8.1 desktop computer as above guide(it also applied to Windows 8.1)

And then tried again.

In addition, have you tried to reset the router for test?

I just tried to connect and it still diables my local internet connection. And by reset the router do you mean like completely reset it or just like unplug and reboot it?

Hi,

I mean reset it completely and reconfigure it. And have you follow my steps, remove all old VPN connection and build a new connection as that guide?

I did all that and now when I connect it still disables my local internet and the host says that i'm disconnected after 20 seconds while the client still shows being connected. The host also showed no bytes being transferred while the client did. I'm also using the latest model Apple Airport Extreme for my router with an older model set up to extend the network if that makes any difference.

That sounds like the split tunnel issue. See this Cable Guy article for an explanation including the potential security issues if you enable split tunneling. You can configure the built-in VPN connection to disable that, ie. give you access to the VPN tunnel and the local LAN/internet by UNCHECKING the Use default gateway on remote network checkbox.

I'm not very familiar with all of this and I just read that whole page but I'm still confused on which method I should use and exactly how to do it. But I do appreciate your response.

It means this usually happens when the subnet at the remote location is the same as the local subnet. Please check it.

My schools subnet is 255.255.0.0 and my homes is 255.255.255.0
