VPN Connections Do Not Save
After right clicking on Connection Properties, Security tab, Choosing Automatic (Type of VPN), Data encryption (Requires encryption - disconnect if server declines), Authentication (Use Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) with the Microsoft : Protected EAP (PEAP) (encrytion enabled) radio buttonm, then selecting its Properties under that selection, my company requires that I deselect Validate server certificate, use Secured Password (EAP)-MSCHAP v2) under the Select Authentication Method, to clear the Enable Fast Reconnect check box, then select the Enable Network Access Protection check box. After clicking OK two times to save the settings, I find that the changes never end up saving. Its this last set, that I'm having problems. It seems that there may be "rights" somewhere that prevent the changes (I have been setting up under Administator).

Hi, I have also tried this with your steps and the settings are saved. At this time, please check the following: 1. Ensure you are using an account which has the proper permission to change the settings. You can also try the administrator account. 2. Remove the current connection and create a new one to see how it works. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thanks Nicholas for your suggestion. I deleted the prior settings and started all over, this time as Administrator and I'm still having the same issue under Windows 7 I also have a Vista machine that I am successful in connnecting, using similar settings. Let me give you some initial information. I’ve started by setting up the Network Access Protection Agent service and run as administrator the following: netsh nap client set enforcement ID = 79623 Admin = "Enable" Then I set up the connection process using the Office WAN Miniport (PPTP) using my internet connection (VPN) with the proper internet address, then the problems begin (long before I get a chance to connect). When I go to the Network and Sharing Center and right click on my VPN Connection to change some of the settings, none of the settings seem to have been saved. When I right click on the properties, the IP address is OK (the same that I typed in), but when I click on the Security tab and choose: Type of VPN: Automatic Data Encryption: Require encryption (disconnect if server declines) Authentication section – Select the radio button ‘Use Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) and then select “Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) (encryption enabled) I Click the Properties button under the Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) (encryption (enabled) option. My instructions then are to: Clear the Validate server certificate check box. Clear the Connect to these servers check box, and then select Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) under Select Authentication Method. Clear the Enable Fast Reconnect check box, and then select the Enable Network Access Protection check box. I click the OK button two times to accept these custom settings boxes. This is where the problem starts. If I try to verify (validate) the settings were saved by going back to the Protected EAP Properties tab, I see that the defaulted settings are still there (the one’s I clicked off and the Enforce Network Access Protection are no longer there). Now if I try to connect, I get a Error 864: The remote access connection completed, but authentication failed because a certificate that validates the server certificate was not found in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities certificate store. I think is still centers around Windows 7 not saving the settings and not being able to pass the certificate. I'm getting very frustrated and Lenovo says they don't support Microsoft (even though they installed in on the new T410) and Microsoft says that the product ID indicates that there will be a charge for this Microsoft support. I'm in a "Catch 22" and about ready to send this "lemon" of a laptop back to Lenovo. Nobody wants to take possession of a possible problem. Hope this might shed some additional light into my problem.

I am also experiencing the same problem on Windows 7 Home Premium. I followed the steps HAPete posted which are identical to the instructions provided by my company. This is a brand new load from HP.

Found a workaround. Create the connection on another machine, search for the .pbk file, copy to the other machine (I put it in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Connections), and reboot. I had to retype the Pre-shared key but other than that it worked.

This worked for me too. Other recommendations lead down the path that there is a driver on my PC that is blocking me from being able to save the EAP settings... I hope Microsoft figures this out so it works flawlessly despite any driver issues or at least provides a more detailed troubleshooting methhodology for resolving this.

Just for the record, I had the same problem on a new laptop, and used the same workaround. Thanks.

In my case this problem was presents only in Lenovo laptops, and the solution is use the Lenovo Access Connection Program, for configure VPN properties. Create new profile, on Aditionals values Enable VPN connection, on values add VPN created previously (on Control Panel, network and internet), select Edit, go to Security option and Use EAP (PEAP) properties, write server name, certificates, enable Network Address Protection and select OK two times. Check again VPN parameters on Control Panel, Network & Internet, Network connections, VPN configuration, Security. I hope this can help you Best Regards.Donato
