VM hosted on 128gb usb 3.0 drive disconnectes on boot

I'm having a problem starting up an image via VM player in Windows 8.1 from a 128gm USB3.0 kingston stick. This same image will start fine from an external 500gig USB hard drive. During the first few seconds of the image starting the hosting USB stick disconnects from Windows 8 and then of course the image bootup fails. This same USB stick and image can boot fine on a Windows 7 machine.

Any thoughts?

Peter

Machine is a Surface 2

This stick in question stays connected to windows 8.1 fine in all other instances. It's only during the startup of the virtual machine where it fails, so it's not a wonky stick.
