Using Windows Firewall to block third party sites as practice in configuring Windows Firewall
I thought it would be a nice exercise for me to configure my Windows 7 firewall to block packets coming from advertisers. So I started a netmon trace, went to a few of my regularly visited websites, parsed the trace to look for probable IP Addresses of ad hosters and compiled a list of IP Addresses that I want to block. I then created an Inbound Exclude rule that listed out the IP Addresses (or range of Addresses) that I want to block. But it doesn’t seem to be working. I’ll start the netmon trace, go to the website, see the adds, and find in the trace the IP Addresses that I had configured to block. My suspicion is that there is another firewall rule (some default internet traffic rule) that’s letting the traffic come in from the IP Addresses I’m intentionally trying to block. Any help on what to do next?
