Using Windows Explorer to search files for strings
Is there a way to search for text strings within files with Windows 7 Explorer? Alternatively, is there another program that does the job?

Hi, I've almost pretty much given up on Windows Search; I miss the good old days when you can specify strings within the files to search for. Try NirSoft's SearchMyFiles, an alternative for Windows Search. You can download the tool from this link: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/search_my_files.html Regards, Salvador Manaois III MCSE MCSA MCTS MCITP:EA/SA C|EH CIWA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytes & Badz: http://badzmanaois.blogspot.com My Passion: http://flickr.com/photos/badzmanaois My Scripting Blog: http://sgwindowsgroup.org/blogs/badz

Hi, Search the contents of files feature is available in Windows 7. Please follow the steps below to enable it: 1. Open Windows Explorer, click on Organize -> Folder and Search Option 2. Click the Search tab, and then place a check mark on ‘Always search file names and contents. I have tried placing a check mark on 'Always search file names and contents' but a search still does not find a text string that I know is in a Word file I have created. All I get is 'No items match your search'. I have also tried the Search and Indexing troubleshooter but this could not identify the problem. I am trying SearchMy Files next.

I'm trying to do a search in files as well. I checked "Always search file names and contents". But how do I specify a search string in the search window?
