Using Windows 8 Remote Desktop to access Windows XP Pro

Hi....I'm running Windows 8 Family (or whatever, but not Pro).  I need to use the Remote Desktop App to connect to my Windows XP Pro PC on my home network.

Norton AV, etc was preinstalled on the Windows 8 PC when we got it.

When I bring up the Remote Desktop App and enter either the IP address or the PC name for the XP machine, it searches for a while and then gives up.

I can, however, connect to the Windows XP PC from my Windows 7 Pro laptop with no problems.

Any ideas?  Thanks....RDK

1. What is the response of netstat -ano  ?

2. Is port 3389 opened on target PC?

3. Is the RD security level lovered at W 8?

The is only difference when target computer id W 8, because of only Pro version can be the remote desktop host.

Milos,

Thanks for the reply, but I have no idea what you are saying!?

I will reiterate my situation:

  • I can Remote Desktop into the target Windows XP Pro computer from my Windows 7 Pro Laptop which is on the same network as the Windows 8 computer which does not  connect.  Thus, I assume all ports and security settings on the target computer are  correct.  Is that correct?
  • I did not try netstat, as indicated above, I assumed all ports and security settings were correct.
  • " Is the RD security level lovered at W 8?", would you care to translate this into something I might understand?

Sorry if I'm a bit inexperienced with this issue and Windows 8.....RDK

Hi,

Try to use RDP on both desktop and Modern Start Menu. You can install RDP program form App Store to see if it works.

Also temporary disable firewall and antivirus program.

If the issue persists, restart  Remote Desktop Services, or try to create another administrator account and login to see if the same issue occurs.

Hope that helps.

Leo...Thanks for you reply.  I guess I must be really dense as I do not follow your suggestion.

The Remote Desktop application is already part of the Windows 8 system, so I do not understand why I should have to get it from the App Store.

The inability to Remote Desktop to the old WIndows XP computer from the new Windows 8 computer happened with two different Administrator ID's.

I will look into the Remote Desktop Services and see it they are running.  That Windows 8 PC and related network are, however, at my sister's house.  This will have to wait until I can contact her or my next visit.

Thanks for your comments.....RDK

Also please try to disable firewall and antivirus program to see if it works.

I can not accept Leo's answer 1) as he did not answer the questions in my most recent reply and 2) until I can test this on my sister's Windows 8 PC......RDK

I am having the same issue and quite frankly I am growing tired of these version related problems. I just want it to work and given what I've already paid for this OS and new laptop, I should not have to go into the system settings and spend days trouble shooting to make it work.

I have a subscription to gotomypc.com now because I don't have the time for this nonsense.

I would however be very interested to know the solution should you ever find it.
