Users cannot change domain password with Vista
Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction. Our network is 2003 AD with XP clients and about 20 vista enterprise machines. When you try to change yourdomain password on a vista box is tells you the username or passwordare incorrect, doing the same on XP machine is fine. We have another seperate 2003 AD networkusing the same Vista image, here wehave no problem. Servers are running 2003 SP1. We haveremovedSP2but to no avail. Everyone group would appear to have change password permissions, like I say all on XP is fine but not Vista on this AD. Thanks

I'm having a similar issue that could be related:We have a windows 2003 terminal server environment. One user when login in to her computer was warned that her password was going to expire soon. She diceded to continue to logon wihtout changing her password. When she tried to connect the terminal server trough RDP connection she was remided again of her password expiration and this time she decided to change it.Now when she reboots her computer she is unable to log on with her new password. Whan comes worse she cannot use her old password either. The only whey she can logon to her workstation is by ussing a fingerprint option that came with the laptop. This option has the new password saved since I tried to rever to her old password but then the fingerprint does not work.Once logged in I wanted to refresh the policies on her computer but the gpudate command does not worked, she got the following error:Updating Policy...User policy could not be updated successfully. The following errors were encountered:The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following:a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller.b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).Computer Policy update has completed successfully. To diagnose the failure, review the event log or invoke gpmc.msc to access information about Group Policy results.I need then to synchronize her local password with the domain password but I cant find a way to do it.Comments and help are really much appreciated.thanks.Francisco

Hello, We are having the same problem at our place. We have a multi domain enviroment containing a mix of Vista and XP machines. If the Vista machine domainaccountand the user domain accountdo not reside in the same domain the user is unable to change their password from that machine, they receive a message "username or password are incorrect". However, if they go to an XP machinehavingthe same accountconfiguration they are able to complete the change without a problem. I suspect that there is a setting or issue with domain trusts that Vista is processing differently than XP, however I do not what it is thus how to change it. I too would be grateful for any advice or tips on how to resolve this problem. Thanks,

I've already faced such problem with Vista and found a very simple solution: start two services, "Windows Time" and "Remote Procedure Call Locator". I've done that and now the problem is gone.If you're using a German-based version, it can be another problem. Further details in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936460.

While changing the password, when you entered the username, did you type in just the username? Or did you type in either "domain\username" or "username@domain"? Vista requires that you specify the domain name, so ensure that the domain name is being entered.

HI All, I've tried the last two potential solutions. RPC locator service is now started on all DC's and on my Vista workstation but to no effect. I have also change the user from domain\username to username@domain, this time I got a different error message saying that the password couldn't be changed as the server was unavailable, now its back to the original error. I should also say that if you log on to Outlook Web Access on our Exchange 2007 box you can change the password without issue, obviously there is no Vista in the equation. Any other potential fixes more than welcome, was thinking is it something strange in Group Policy that I've set incorrectly with security policy? Can I run any diagnostic tools against secpol? Kevin

Security policies can cause all those problems too. Inspect them, paying more attention to password-related policies: minimum requirements, repeating passwords restrictions, minimum time to leave the password unchanged, etc.In my case, I have a 2003-based domain with 30 XP workstations. All my security policies had been defined when I installed the server and since then I've never had problems with them. I've always scheduled inspections to find security holes too.The first Vista PC that joined the domain had this behavior, not allowing the users to change their passwords. The user that couldn't change his password on a Vista PC, could change his password on a XP one with no problems. So, obviously, it was a Vista issue. Starting and setting as Automatic those two services, RPC Locator and Windows Time, solved the issue. Now, when the user needs to change the password, it's not necessary to type user@domain ou domain\user, he leaves the user field the way it is and only type the old and the new password twice.Regards,Roberto Ferreira

I've looked a GPO to see if anything is obvious, but looks fine. One thing I have just tried is using the net user command to change the password from the Vista command line, and it works. Really struggling on this, if it uses same basic components as Vista and same permissions then why does it work???

Try re-inserting the computer to the domain, or remove it from the domain and delete it'saccount on AD, and then add it.

Hey, What you need is to recover the domain password. Windows Password Recovery Corporation can help you reset the domain password. It can work well under Windows Server 2000/2003/2008(Active Directory domain controller) Here is its official website: http://www.windowspasswordrecovery.net/windowspasswordrecoverycorporation.html
