Users can format disk volumes in Windows 7 !?
This might sound a little weird, but how to disable someone with “user” privileges to be able to format my disks volumes on Windows 7. As I remember, in Windows XP only the Administrators have that permeation but not the users. I have checked this on several machines. By default, on Windows 7, users can format disk volumes and this is unacceptable. How can I change this?

I’m quite sure that standard user in Windows 7 can format disk drive or partition. I have check this several times and I don’t think that I’m doing something wrong. Please can you check this for sure and tell me what is wrong. Thanks in advance.

I have tested this on WMvare virtual machine. The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. I have log in as Administrator and created a user with user name and password. I leave the user in default user group “Users”. Then, after restart, I logon with that user account I just created and from Windows Explorer I simply go to “D” partition and with right click I have pick “format”… and partition is gone. I have tested this user for other functions, and everything is ok, except formatting partitions. Is it possible that, maybe because is virtual machine or maybe is bug with WMvare? Regards

otherwise ; in the configuration of local GPO , there is an important GPO named "perform maintenance volume disk" if it's enabled to users , they can do the formatage if itsn't not , they can't do this so check it and tell us the result if it help you good luck :) System Engineer | vNext Consulting

Hi, Marwab I have checked what you said about “perform maintenance volume disk”. It’s enabled only for Administrators group. I think that something is wrong with the VMware. I have tried on a physical machine and everything is ok. If anyone has tried this on VMware Workstation virtual machine and has find the same problem, please tell me.
