Username match to Documents and Settings/Username
A user installs XP and creates a user account named JOE. The folder in Documents and Settings is JOE. Time passes. JOE changes his user account name to JOSEPH. However, the folder in documents and settings is still JOE. No problem, all works ok. However, JOSEPH is going through some Zen-thing, and wants the folder to appear as JOSEPH also. He creates another user, with admin privileges, named TOM. JOSEPH logs off as JOSEPH and logs on as TOM. As user TOM, he goes to Documents and Settings and renames folder JOE to JOETEMP. He then goes to the Control Panel/User Accounts and deletes user JOSEPH, and does not keep any user files. He then creates a new user account JOSEPH. Then, he logs off as TOM, and logs on as JOSEPH. As expected, he has anew desktop, and the folder in Documents and Settings is now JOSEPH. He logs off as JOSEPH, and logs on as TOM. As TOM, he goes to Documents and Settings and deletes folder JOSEPH, and renames JOETEMP to JOSEPH. He logs off as TOM, and logs back on as JOSEPH. His desktop and settings are all as they originally were and JOSEPH is happy. He goes to the Control Panel/User Accounts and deletes TOM. JOSEPH is not concerned with cookies. All other settings appear to work correctly for him (my documents, pictures, music, etc). He tests all the applications, and all work fine. He performs updates and such, no problems. The only item noticed in the event log is the Search Indexer complaining about trying to index the old JOE folder, which does not bother JOSEPH in the least. Question: Are there any shortcomings JOSEPH should be concerned about when using this procedure to match the user name with the folder name? If there are no issues, why would "rename user" also not rename the folder? DocComputers verified since 1972

Hi Dr. Strangelove, You should have no issues unless all the “settings” from the previous user account is correctly copied. Fix a corrupted user profilehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile (See the section “To copy files to the new user profile”) By design, changing the user name will not change the user folder structure, folder attributes and user reference in the registry.
