User-Administrator account Permissions Changed
I have an administrator account (CompAdmin) and what I call a user account (Gary), but I got tired of logging off and on to access administrator privileges, so I converted Gary to an administrator account. All worked fine for almost a year. Right after the last Windows 7 (Ultimate, 64bit) update (KB2541014), I started noticing problems with permissions. I couldn’t do a complete install of some software updates because permission was denied to certain folders. Then I discovered that some Windows routines no longer appear on my “All Programs” list. In particular, almost all “System Tools” are missing in my Gary account although I can see them fine in CompAdmin. It looked as though my Gary account had been converted to a standard user’s account. However when I go to Control Panel – User Accounts, Gary is labeled as an administrator account. * Are others experiencing this after the update? * How can I get things back the way they were? Although it is distasteful, I am open to converting Gary to a standard user account and living with the annoying log off/log on’s necessary to make changes, if that is the prevailing wisdom and if it will prevent things like this.

Thanks, Alex, The problem seems to have been caused by my losing ownership of many of my folders about the time of the last update. Particularly affected were my folders under the Start menu. I may well discover more folders that I no longer own, but I appear to be funcioning fine now. At your suggestion, I booted to the last known good configuration (something I had forgotten about--Thanks) and used the SFC tool. I noticed no change from either. Since I am functional now and since more time has passed, I don't want to open up the possible pitfalls that can come from reverting to a prior restore point or rebuilding my profile. I am still very curious as to how I lost ownership of the folders. I'm the only one that uses this thing, and I if I did something to affect that, I have no idea what it could have been. Please keep a lookout for more instances of that.Gary Burton
