Use a Microsoft account without changing username

Hi.

I am sure by this time everyone knows that in Windows 8.1, SkyDrive app cannot be used unless the user migrate to a Microsoft Account. (Old SkyDrive app can also not be installed.) The problem is, by performing the migration, the old username becomes invalid and network computers are no longer able to access my computer.

Is there a compromise here?

Hi,

What did you mean that old username becomes invalid? Can you switch user account to older account? if not, is there any error message with it?

For network computer access, have you checked network sharing setting? Please make sure "Turn on network discovery".

Hi, Roger.

Suppose you have a Windows 8.1 computer called \\FABRIKAM with a local account called John.Smith. You'd login from the network by supplying \\FABRIKAM\John.Smith and your password.

Now, if you switch to a Microsoft account, no computer on the network would recognize \\FABRIKAM\John.Smith anymore.

I just want to make sure you've got your facts right. You say \\FABRIKAM\John.Smith is no longer recognized, right? Is it because you used to just connect without seeing a prompt and now you see a username and password prompt? Hence you assume the problem is with the username?

  • Try \\FABRIKAM\John.Smith with the password of your Microsoft account instead of your local password. (To completely eliminate the prompt, you might need to change the password of the Microsoft account to match that of the local account or change the password of all the local accounts to match that of the Microsoft account.)
  • If it didn't work, go to Computer Management and rename the account username corresponding to John Smith to John.Smith.

Let me know how it turns out. And don't worry; I bet connecting to a Microsoft account isn't joining a domain, i.e. Windows 8 computer won't request a ticket-granting ticket from Hotmail.com or Outlook.com over Kerberos.
