Upnp device M1000 in My Network Places has no properties?
I have an Upnp device name M1000 sometimes listed in My Network Places. Because XP does see this device, it notified me the first time when it installed it. I have a Qwest dsl modem, model M1000, with the firewall settings set to the default "high" settings. Is this the same device? Opening My Network Places will show a network icon (some of the time.) When I right-click this generic icon, select properties, Windows will tell me that this device does not exist on my network, and no properties are available as well. Invoking (whatever that is) does not work either. Closing the window and then re-opening it will result in non-responsive behavior. The window never reappears. When this is done, restarting the computer will always result in explorer.exe hanging and restart will hang unless I force explorer to quit using the program quit box. Why is this occurring? Other than this issue, XP is running just fine.1 person got this answerI do too

The most likely explanation is that this is the QWest dsl modem. You might check that this modem is on the latest firmware available from Qwest, and you could also see whether it is possible to disable UPnP functionality in the modem. There was a time when it was widely accepted that disabling UPnP in such devices was a good security practice. I don't see it as particularly valuable today--if you use services which involve connections inbound through the modem, which UPnP will make transparent in their set-up--then leave it enabled. If you don't, disabling it will at a minimum get rid of this device icon, which isn't particularly useful in your case. Bill Sanderson, Thank you for your answer. I didn't think it was supposed to be there, either. Since I wrote, there have been no further incidents with the computer hanging on reboot. Perhaps installing Windows Defender has helped? I also use Sandboxie in most browsing situations. Joe

I don't think either WIndows Defender or Sandboxie would be related to this object appearing or not. The other possibility--if the object were not your own DSL modem, would be that it was somebody elses! I'm not sure this is possible with DSL, but it is with cable modems--sometimes other users cable modems are visible as UPnP objects. This is bad, from a security standpoint for the owner of that other modem--but not a significant problem really.
