Upgrading from Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
I am trying to upgrade my PC from Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Microsoft has said that with the upgrade disk this is possible but when I try I have to run aclean install. It does not work and the operating system does not come up. I had to reformat my computer. Is there a program that will assist me in changing the 32 bit to a 64 bit or is the only way it can be done is if I purchase the full, vs. the upgrade, program?

It's not permitted to do an upgrade-in-place from any 32 bit Windows to a 64 bit version, as far as I know. It's also not permitted to do an upgrade-in-place from Vista Ultimate to Win7 Pro, in the same bit depth. Here's a version of the upgrade matrix:http://i.zdnet.com/blogs/windows_7_upgrade_chart.pngYou should have been able to do a custom (clean) install using an X64 upgrade DVD. You'd have to boot from the DVD, though, rather than launching the DVD from 32 bit Vista. If you've ended up with no OS on the drive, you can still use the upgrade DVD:http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=1505&tag=col1;post-1505

Ireceived the Windows 7 Upgrade pogramthrough the special educational purchase plan by Digital River. In their write up was the statement, from Microsoft, thatMicrosoftis supplying a program that would allow the cross over from 32 to 64 bit. It was supposed to be a part of the down loaded upgrade as well as the actual disk I received. I tried the clean install as I was supposed to, from the DVD,but still the operating system did not accept the change. I had to reformat and start all of the steps over. I have the 32 bit Windows Prof. system installed but I really wanted to go to the 64 bit.
