Upgraded to Windows 7, network adapter not showing in device manager
I upgraded from XP to Windows 7. There was no network adapter listed in the device manager at first. I went into add legacy hardware, and first it gave me options for Intel and Microsoft adapters. Playing with that, I finally got an Unknown Device to show in Device Manager. I was able to select a manufacturer for it (Nvidia), so now I have the Nvidia nForce Network Controller showing in my Device manager...with a yellow exclamation sign on it. The error message is This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. I have tried downloading the most recent drivers (15.51), same result. I tried the drivers that were slightly older (both 15.35 and 15.23) and same results. I have tried going into the windows.old for the drivers when it was on XP, and same result. I have a wired connection. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? The adapter is a Nvidia nForce 5 series.

Hello Msdfr, First you might go to Device Manager, right click your devicewith the yellow exclamationmark in the frontand select Update Driver Software; then click Search automatically for updated driver software. Note: Drivers on the Windows Update site are directly provided by hardware manufacturers. Microsoft tests drivers in various environments before they are published; however, we cannot guarantee all drivers will work on all hardware platforms as there are too many different models, although their hardware ID are the same as the standard version. In some cases, due to hardware modifications by different manufacturers, the driver updates may cause some error. If it does not work on your issue, I'd suggest you installing the Vistadriver inCompatibility mode. Remove and rescan that hardware device in Device Manager, right-click on the driver executable/installer file -> Properties and select the Compatibility tab; click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows Vista in the list-down box; then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator. In addition, you can use the Windows XP driver for testing. Meanwhile, please understand that Windows 7 is a new operating system and whole driverstore has been reprogrammed; you might wait or push the device manufacturer to upgrade its driver. Thanks for your time and understanding! For more details, please look at the first Sticky threadat the top ofthis forum. What can I do if my hardware does not work? This will give you some guidelines. Good Luck! Andy

Hello The network adapter was not listed in device manager at all, that was my original problem. The Add Legacy Hardware option wasn't doing anything for me. Trying to update the drivers for the network adapters I added that way did nothing. So this is how I resolved it. 1. I uninstalled all of the network adapters that I added through Add Legacy Hardware. 2. I ran the XP driver installer for the network adapter after going into properties and clicking the boxes to run in compatibility mode for XP and run as administrator. The device was still not listed in device manager. I tried a reboot, still not showing. 3. So then I shutdown and unplugged the power source from my computer. After the light went out on the back of the pc, I waited 30 seconds and plugged the power cord back in and booted up. Upon rebooting, the system then finally recognized I did indeed have a network adapter and installed the drivers for it. I can now get online and see the home network, yay! For anyone who does not have a network adapter showing in device manager, just go straight to steps 2 and 3 above to hopefully fix it for you too. Thanks for replying.
