Upgraded to Vista now I have no internet
I just upgraded from winxp pro to vista business over the weekend. Everything seemed ok while at home, I have a security enabled wireless network at home and was able to connect with no problems. First thing I did this morning upon arriving to work was to join the domain (no problems there). After joining the domain, I then go in and configure my lan connection to connect to the internet. I go into the TCP/IPv4 properties of the lan connection>advanced and add my routers ip address as the default gateway (just as i have done in the past for xp pro machines). After doing this, I have no internet connection. I can access network resources, shares ect.. with no problem but no internet. Also in network and sharing the access level of the network is set to local only??? I then try to connect to a wap that we have set up for external internet access. This wap is not tied into our domain network it ties directly to the dsl modem and does not have any type of security enabled. I can of course connect to the wireless network but again, I have no internet connection and the access level is set to local only??? This is the first vista machine we have on site (about 85 xp pro users), what must I do to connect the internet? Please help, I have wasted half the day on this.

ok, so the unsecured wap connection is resolved. Anyone have any ideas on my ethernet lan only enabled for local access and not connecting to the internet?

Hi, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, I would like to suggest trying following to narrow down the issue: 1. Please ping some websites and check the results. 2. Please run the following command to ensure that the computer is using the correct DNS server for name resolutions. >nslookup >www.microsoft.com (Type the URLs you want to check here.) Will the correct IP address be returned? If this test failed, please check the DNS settings on your DNS server and check if the client has applied the DNS settings properly. 3. Configure the NIC settings to obtain the IP address and DNS automatically to see if the settings are applied properly. You can also run ipconfig /all on the problematic computer and one Windows XP computer and compare the report to check if there are something abnormal. If possible, please also remove and reinstall (or upgrade) the NIC driver to see if it works. 4. If there is a ISA server in the domain, you may need to configure the client. 5. If you use proxy to access the Internet, please also check the settings. 6. Please check if you have some specific settings in domain which blocked the joined client accessing the Internet. Meanwhile, if you have another Windows Vista computer, please try to join it to domain to see if it works. Hope this helps. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hello Nicholas, Thank you for the response. Here is alink to a forum where the user is having the exact same problem that I am. We also have a proxy server set up for user internet access but I do not connect through the proxy. In the past, I have defined the default gateway's ip address (cisco router)in the tcp/ip properties of the nic and I could connect directly to the internet without have to specify the proxy server's ip under lan connections of internet options. With vista, I have specified the same router's ip address as the default gateway under the tcp/ipv4 properties of the nic but I am unable to ping any external sites. The nic is configured to obtain dns automatically. In vista, if I specify the ip address of the proxy under the lan connection settings of internet options, I can connect to the internet but again, I do not want to go through the proxy. If xp could do it, there should be a way to do it in vista. Please help!

Ok, so I have found a work around but I can't say that I am a big fan. I went into the tcp/ipv4 properties of the nic and assigned my machine a static ip, subnet mask, default gateway, and dns server. I can now connect to domain shares and the internet (without going through the proxy)with no problems. In xp pro, I would only define the default gateway as a static address but would obtain my ip and dns server address automatically. Why can vista not do this?
