Upgrade path for ForeFront Eindpoint Clien 2010 with ConfigMgr 2007

Hi,

What would be the best way to upgrade our ForeFront 2010 clients to the latest version (4.8.204.0 according to the Software Updates in ConfigMgr)? Clients are currently running the 2.1.1116.0 version that came with the ForeFront 2010 Server Update Rollup 1.

I've installed KB295267 on the ConfigMgr server which brings the FEPInstall.exe to version 4.5.0216.0 so when new clients are running the OSD Task Sequence they'll install that version. At the end they have to update, via Software Updates, to 4.7.x and eventually 4.8.x. Existing clients would have to install 4.1.x > 4.3.x > 4.5.x > 4.7.x > 4.8.x. This matches what I've read on the ConfigMgr blog about releasing the updates to MU.

That's alot of reboots that i'm trying to prevent. I figured why not just run the UpdateInstall.exe from KB304956 but I'm not sure this is the best way of doing this.

I'm not sure if just running the updateinstall.exe from the latest 4.8 is sufficient to update such old clients. However, the full fepinstall.exe from version 4.7 should work. Then you would just have one incremental update left. You can get the 4.7 (KB3041687) installer here:

Thanks, that cuts down on reboots quite considerable. Just to be sure if we can't directly upgrade to 4.8, I've opened a severty C case at Microsoft. If there is a way to upgrade to 4.8 directly, I'll post it here for future reference.

Hi,

Any update?

Best Regards,

We've been informed that upgrading to 4.5 and then update through Software Updates to the lastest version is the only supported upgrade path. I've tested the suggestion by KevinMJohnston and that seems to work just fine in our situation.

So for now, we'll upgrade to 4.7 first and than later on push the 4.8 update with Software Updates.

I recently upgraded out company to FEP 2010 because FCS 2007 went EOL during my holiday (figures).

Also noticed the ridiculous upgrade path for this client.
If a client is uninstalled, then installed again, why not directly to the latest version instead of every minor version update as well?
