Upgrade install for Windows 7
Windows Installer has quit working and no new programs can be installed. Computer is a new Dell Studio with Windows 7 Home Premium. It did work but quit. I've tried the suggested fixes in several KB articles and posts to no avail. I notice one post that suggested an upgrade install over the existing Windows 7 installation. My questions . . . (1) if I do this will all settings, desktops, newtork, and printers remain in place or will I be required to start over with setup and (2) is there any way to just reinstall the Windows Installer files? Thanks, Rick

How long has this been the case? Have you tried a System Restore to a date before this started happening? What does Event Viewer show? Are there any errors related to Windows Installer?Rich Why can't I be different and original like everybody else? - Vivian Stanshal

I can't say how long it's been . . . I haven't installed anything recently. Yes, there are entries in the event viewer as follows: Log Name: ApplicationSource: MsiInstallerDate: 3/20/2010 9:50:55 AMEvent ID: 1033Task Category: NoneLevel: InformationKeywords: ClassicUser: Condo-PC\RickComputer: Condo-PCDescription:Windows Installer installed the product. Does anything here help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175 Tom
March 20th, 2010 5:59pm

No I've tried pretty much everything there. What I would like to do is to reinstall just the Windows Installer but it seems there is no way to do it. Rick

You want the redistributable for Windows installer 5.0, I believe. I don't know if has been released for download yet. I can only find up to and including 4.5. Is a repair install of Windows 7 an option? Your programs and user files should be OK. However, best practise is to back up everyting, especially user files, first. Tom

Thanks, Do you know if the redistrubutable Windows Installer is close to being released? If not, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go for the reinstall from the distribution disk. Thanks for your help. Rick

One possibility here: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed (Error 1719) It's for Vista but should also apply to Windows 7.Rich Why can't I be different and original like everybody else? - Vivian Stanshal

I 'checked around'. I would not be surprised to see it soon; however, it's very much a 'don't hold your breath' situation. No one who can say with any authority is allowed to say for reasons of legal privilege. And anything anyone else says is just conjecture. On balance, I'd say to go with the repair/refresh reinstall. Please be aware that the machine is going to be restored to the state it was in when you purchased it if you use the Dell-supplied system restore feature. You will have to re-install any applications you installed later and all user files such as pictures and word-processor documnets. My earlier answer assumed rather dangeriously that you were referring to a system image or backups you made after the system was completely set up and that you would use that or those to restore it. Do check the documentation that came with the computer and that for it on the Dell web site. You will want to be sure you understand the restore procedure and what you must do to preserve your applications and files. Good luck. Tom

Thanks for checking . . . The applications that I want to install can wait for a while so I'll probably wait for a while to see if anything happens. I do have an image (Acronis) from shortly after I set up the new box but i stillthink I'll wait to see what happens. Rick

You must do as you think best, of course. However, the Acronis image shoould be perfectly servicable for the purpose. Tom

Hi, I would like to suggest you try to import the Windows Installer service registry for Windows 7 x86 or Windows 7 x64 to repair Windows Installer. If it does not work, you may perform the In-Place upgrade to repair the system files. In-Place upgrade remains the settings, desktops, network and printers. In-place Upgrade ============ 1. Start the computer. 2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: a. If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. b. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: b1. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK. Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b2. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the Which type of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7. Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT
