Upgrade Windows 7 Beta (32-bit) to Windows 7 (64-bit)
I bought a new laptop with Windows Vista (64-bit) installed. It came with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when released. While I was waiting for the release of Windows 7 my IT guy installed the BETA version (build 7100) of Windows 7. I am now finding out that my BETA version is set to expire soon. I tried the upgrade disk DELL sent me (Windows Vista to Windows 7; 64-bit). I get the following error message: This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced). What steps do I need to take so that I can use the DELL upgrade disk? I'm not sure if the problem with the disk is going from 32-bit to 64-bit OR trying to use a Vista upgrade with Windows 7 already loaded. If I need to wipe my existing OS what is the best way to backup my information? THANX

Upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit is not possible, and you will have to do a clean install. I always just: copy files I want to keep (documents, photos, etc.) to CDs or DVDs, an external hard drive, or a flash drive install windows copy the files back If you have an external hard drive or flash drive, you could also try using "Windows Easy Transfer" (in the start menu, Accessories folder, then System Tools folder), but I have never used that.

To install the Windows 7 Upgrade, you need to get the previous OS Windows Vista (64-bit) back and then install Windows 7 over it.Here is the detailed steps.Hope it helps.Vivian Xing - MSFT
