Updates deleted my email. How do I get the files back.
I came home to a rebooted computer (which is not unusual) and realized that there had been an automatic update. When I started Outlook Express it asked me the initial questions about installing the program again. What is going on? Where is my old email and contacts!!!!????? How do I turn off auto updates so this doesn't happen again???? 1 person needs an answerI do too

please look under these locations:C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\{GUID}orC:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htmI have never seen a reboot cause email files to be removed (although I am not saying it could not happen)I'm guessing that you might have multiple logins (look under C:\Documents and Settings\<User> for each user) I dont recommend turning off automatic updates!

Instead of turning off Automatic Updates, do the following: - Right-click My Computer- Click the Automatic Updates tab- Select either "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them" OR "Notify me but don't automatically download or installthem." Click OK When the Automatic Update icon in the system notification area appears to inform you that updates are ready to be installed (or ready to be downloaded and installed), click the "Custom" button rather than the"Express" button. This will enable you to review the updates beforethey are installed. In general, you should install all "high-priority"updates and NOT install any hardware-related optional updates.-- Lem

Do two things:1: Do an Advanced Search and include Hidden Files and Folders. Search for: *.dbx What are the results?2: In the Windows Recycle Bin, (not Deleted Items), are there any BAK files? If so, check the date created. Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]
