Updates continually failing on Windows 7 (Error 800706BE)
Hi, I have a new workstation which was updating fine but has now stopped updating. it gives an error message of 800706BE. I have disabled the third party firewall to see if that caused a problem. is there any way of re-initiating the failed updates?

Hi dperrott, You can first try Windows Update troubleshooting tool by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Troubleshooting -> Fix problems with Windows Update. If the issue persists, rename the Windows Update Temporary folders by the steps below: 1. Click the Start Button and type in "Notepad" (without the quotation marks) in the open box and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and paste them into the opened Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop Cryptsvc ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sdold.old ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 crt2old.old net start wuauserv net start Cryptsvc 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Then choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "temp.bat" (without the quotation marks) as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location. 4. Right click the temp.bat file on Desktop and choose Run as administrator. 5. A DOS-like window will begin processing. Then, please restart the computer and check if we can update now. Hope this helps. Regards, Linda

Linda, I know that this is an older post but I’m hoping you can give me some guidance as well. The outline you described, will that work for Server 2008R2 64 bit? I have basically the same issue. I have one update KB2347290 that will not install. The error I receive is 800706BE. I have disabled loaded startup items from msconfig.exe and tried to install the update from an executable file instead of using update services, restarting the server several times but no luck. The update will initialize but will not install.

Hi, to see the cause of failures with Windows 7/Server 2008 (R2) updates, we must look for error messages in the file CBS.log. Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy the file "CBS.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it) and upload the complete CBS.log to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.
