Updated Windows Store apps don't remove old versions
I've been poking around the WindowsApps folder where all the Windows Store apps are installed and I noticed old versions of all the apps co-existing with the up-to-date versions of the same apps. The apps in question are the Microsoft apps like Mail, Music, etc. The RTM versions exist in their entirety even though they aren't used. I thought this was strange and an inefficient use of space, so I deleted all of the old versions, including a file called jscache_64 or something that appeared to be a system file. Is this a good idea, or a fatal mistake? Also, why wouldn't the Store replace the original versions of a particular app once an update was installed?

I've also seen this. In the CP and RP I was able to use DISM to remove the old versions, but this no longer works in the RTM :(

Hi,

The Windows 8 Store apps are installed as per user. Every user has his own apps and to update an app does not affect the other users.

Hi,

Adding more info.

If you really want to remove them. You can achieve this by running Powershell Command line.

1, Run get-appxpackage -allusers to get installed app list.

2, Run remove-appxpackage -(the app's name you wanna remove)

Thanks for the info, but when I run this command, it only shows the most recent installed instance of an app. I want to remove the old versions that don't get removed when I update the apps. I'm the only user on this computer, so other users are not an issue for me.

Interestingly enough, when I just updated the News app, I did not see a new folder in the WindowsApps directory.

As I said, MS changed this in the RTM. removing the Apps with DISM, Powershell, GUI removes them per users. This is done becasue the apps are no longer listed in the store. If you've uninstall them ,you can add install them back from your HDD:

I have the same problem: after using Windows 8.1 for several months, several apps were autoupdated, but their older versions remain in the %Program Files%\WindowsApps folder. And these older versions are not removed even after removing those apps.

I deleted all the modern apps through elevated PowerShell:

Get-AppxPackage | Remove-AppxPackage

(I have two users on my system, so I executed that command once under each account).

Then,

Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online

So, now I have the following result:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers

Recent versions of the apps were removed, along with the system packages, which they were dependent on: WinJS, VCLibs, and so on. Moreover, the system packages were removed along with their older preview versions, so these were removed completely. But older versions of non-system packages weren't removed.

So, I have several questions:

1. How can those app packages be correctly removed? I mean, aside from manually taking ownership of folders and removing them via the command line.

2. How to prevent this situation from occurring in the future?

3. Why weren't those app packages removed automatically during updating/removing procedures?

4. It seems, that this situation is a bug in app servicing system. If it indeed is, how to report it to Microsoft?

Did you ever find an answer to these questions? Wondering how to remove these old packages as well.
