Update to Window 7?
Can I update to Windows 7, and keep my currentOffice andcurrent computer settings?

Upgrading to Windows 7 is only supported on systems that are running Vista SP1 so that is criteria number 1. Second, I'm not a big fan of upgrading myself. I'd rather perform a clean install and start over. A clean install does two things. One, it ensures that I don't have any "upgrade" related issues.Second, it ensures that I've backed up my entire machine first. This also being the most important things. I've seen too many people try to upgrade without backing up thinking their data is safe and they can rollback if something goes wrong.Joe

I needed to reload this laptop about a week ago. I found out about Windows 7, so I did a fresh install with it. I was constatntly having issues with it, so I reinstalled XP pro. I searched when I was having those issues, but nothing pointed me here for answers.Today I get email about this site, so I am thinking of trying 7 again. Just wondered about upgarade to save Office and the two other programs I need. Everything else is on network share.

I would suggest doing a clean installation as well. I've never had much success with upgrading an OS (Windows or otherwise) not to mention that, in my opinion, a machine should be rebuild every year or so to keep it running smoothly. A word of caution though, if you are migrating from XP to 7 I would make sure that all of your hardware is supported on Vista first (run the upgrade advisor). If your hardware isn't fully supported on Vista, it will likely have problems with 7. My guess would be that your hardware, or more importantly the drivers for your hardware, were causing the problems for your first install.

Why would you want to upgrade to a Beta version from your current system? It will eventually expire!! Install the Beta on a separate hard drive and dual boot your system, that way you shouldn't have problems when the Beta expires.

Also you can go back to Vista or XP if you are having issue with Beta 7 and still leave both on your computeryou have to check to make sure you have enough connections before getting a second hard drive though

As Windows 7 is currently in beta it isn't wise to upgrade from another operating system to windows 7. Anyway once you have upgraded there is,.currently, no way of downgrading so if you had problems you would need to re-install your previous operating system from scratch. If you are going to test windows 7 then i suggest installing it on a seperate partition or hard drive. This is what I do; at least then your 'normal' operating system will remain unaffected. I've done exactly that. (on a new HDD) If you want to try to bring you're email and settings over with Windows Easy Transfer onto a disk or better yet a flash drive. And when the beta expires, doing it in reverse. But be warned, this is a beta and I don't know how well that will work. I recommend backing up you're drive before experimenting.
