Well, Windows wasn't active when I got this update for the first time. I updated Windows, but when I got this error, I searched about this error code and I saw this error comes from invalid licence, so I tried to active Windows. Windows actived, but same error after activing even.

The update did not install automatically. This happens occasionally. Downoad the update package and install it manually.

Go start/all programms/accesories/command prompt - right mouse and run as administrator. Tape: CMD then sfc.exe then sfc/scannow and wait until it end scan. - It deactivates windows to unregistred version. Then restart, start updates, install it and after all reactivate windows again using activator or loader. Tested and works!

I would like to confirm that this update (KB974431) has also failed to install on my 32 bit system. The fact that this update is the same update that failed to install for the thread starter (KB974431) leads me to believe that the update package is corrupt ruling out the possability of his sytem malfunctioning and that no further diagnosis is necessary for the thread starter's OSsystem. I have hidden this update to prevent Windows Updatefrom attempting to re-install it automatically and suggest anyone who encounters diffeculty with this saidupdate to do the same. After I press the postsubmit button I will download the standalone update package and try to install it manually after which I will post the result here.

This update sometimes will not install because of windows activator - crack made changes and nothing more!

It sams to be a license validationproblem after all. Had same problem. After turning off third party firewall, installation was successful. Third party firewall blocked access to license information. Try slmgr.vbs /dli in command line if no information is displayed the problem is probably in personal firewall.BR, Luka

I am having the exact same problem with the exeption that I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and the error code I get is 800736b3. the two updates that I am unable to install are; Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB974431) Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB977863) I have tried all the solutions suggested on this thread as well as trying it in safe mode and turning all other services off in msconfig but still cannot install these two updates . I would very much appreciate any help or advice that anyone can give me. Thank you.

I am not an I.T. professional, nor do I consider myself a computer geek. I am one with average computer skills and the ability to troubleshoot and repair most pc problems with advice from those in the know who post in these forums. However, For over a week, and for several hours a day, I read forum after forum related to Windows 7 failure to install/update through Windows Update. I tried Microsoft's suggestions, added registry items, and basically beat my head against a wall to no avail. Finally, in desperation I rolled my system back to the earliest restore date possible. The windows update then immediately displayed the failure to install in the red outlined box. So,I then went to control panel, administrative services, and disabled then restarted windows update. Bingo, windows update then successfully downloaded and installed over 80 critical and optional updates. I don't know if this will work for others, but it's worth a try.

Sadly none of the information in this post has worked for me. The problem I have is not restricted to KB974431. Running sfc /scannow found nothing to fix and did not deactivate Windows. I have the problem on several x64 PCs and one x86. All are running Win 7 Pro and are connected to a Domain network. The regsvr32 updates ran OK except that wuaueng1, wucltui & wuweb don't exist on the x86 PC I am currently trying to fix. I've also manually installed HotFix KB947821 but this has had no effect either. Thanks.
