Make sure that you did have it installed. Check it in View Updates History. Start > in search box, type windows update > press Enter key > left column, click View Update History > find out if it was installed successfully. If yes, when it shos up for install again, right click at it > click Hide. That way, it won't show up and bother you again. 2. Now you can wait for experts to show you how to deal with this issue permenantly.If it solves your problem, I did it. If it does not, my twin brother did it.

Well, I check my so call downloaded updates, it did say that it was sucessfully downloaded, but I went further to see if I could uninstall and it didn't show up on the so call date that it was downloaded. I hope this make sense. Anyway, I did some more research on this and there are many, many people with the same problem, yes you can hide it, but also found out to call 1866-PCSAFETY (1-866-727-2338) and report it to Microsoft. I am going to do just this in the morning.

I contacted a Microsoft free support tech because this is a security update. He advised me that KB2538242 is defective and will be replaced in two weeks. The correct thing to do is hide it and later you can unhide it again then it should disappear from the install list.Jim Kay

When Microsoft patches fail to install or install multiple times, you can download the patch to your desktop and then install it. This has worked for me on just about every failed or multiple install patch from microsoft.Student

Reboot computer, Windows will reported Full updated.

Looking at my update history, I find: "Successful Installs" every day at least once! .. Now I see that it was to be fixed after June 17?? Well, it's July 17 and still showing up as "Successful Install" every reboot. I am offered 3 different versions of the fix when I attempt to install by hand, there is NOTHING in the log or history to indicate which I should use. I chose the 3Mb (? x64) version, I hope it works - but because it erroniously shows "successful", I'll have to reboot to see if it did work. ?? Why didn't MS distribute a fix for this bad update? How many non-techies will be running this update until hell freezes over?

I have no idea how to hide the update in question. I am not that technical of a user. Please help.

It is now Oct 16, and I am still getting Vista everyday updates for KB2538242 If this IS a security problem why has MS not corrected it yet, nor posted any useful info? What does hiding the update do? Does it still update but just hide the information? Is the update really important? Does hiding just keep the update from happening but not fix the problem? If it still does the update, it is wasting time and bandwidth on every reboot? There has been no confirmation here yet whether the "manual update" fixes all the repeat updates, and the precise stepts for the manual update are bit imprecise... I live in Redmond, can you name any buts I should kick? ;-)

The manual download site lists three files to download, whichever is appropriate. It would be nice to be told how to determine which is appropriate. When I look on my computer for vcredist_*.* the search finds 5 hits: vcredist_x64.exe vcredist_x86.exe twice vcredist_deu.exe vcredist_enu.exe In open office, program files, and a camera folder WTF?
