Unrelated internet-accessible port on host computer becomes blocked when a VPN connection is made to the host computer
I'll try to be as clear as possible with this setup...it's probably something simple or security-related, but I can't figure it out...
Home computer: Running Windows 7 Professional, connected to DD-WRT router that forwards port 8888 to it. I use this port for my webcam to serve images to my webpage.
Remote computer: Running Windows 7 Home Premium at my workplace.
Yesterday, I connected to the home computer from work with a PPTP VPN connection, which worked fine, and I left the VPN connected when I returned home, since I was transferring a large file through the tunnel that was going to take a while.
Today, I did a port scan on my home computer from a security-related website and noticed that port 8888 was not responding as it should have been. After checking the router forwarding rules that checked out OK, and after disabling the home computer's
firewall, which didn't fix anything, and even putting my home computer in "DMZ" mode over the router, still port 8888 didn't respond to the scan,
nor did any other port ! I suspected the ISP of foul play.
So what I did then was simply disconnect the client VPN connection that I set up yesterday from work, and bingo! Everything was back to normal, and port 8888 was accessible to the home computer again and serving images as expected.
Is this normal behavior, and is there a way to maintain the ports forwarded to my home computer when a client VPN is connected to it?
Thanks for your help!

I think this issue may be related to the ISP (Internet Service Provider).
