Hi, I ended up formatting the computer and the problem went away and hasn't came back. I searched high and low for someone else who had the same problem but found nothing. Thanks, Andrew

i have a dell inspiron 1501 laptop running windows vista home premium media center edition. i have recently been getting an error when trying to view networked computer saying "connection status: unknown" and "the dependency service or group failed to start". i started by disabling and re-enabling the driver and that did not help. i then brought up the services.msc thing and started looking at the networking services. i noticed that the Network Location Awareness service was not started so i tried to start it. i got a popup message saying "Windows could not start the Netwrok Location Awareness service on Local Computer. Error 0xc000096: 0xc0000096". i also get an error popup when i try to start the Network List service saying "Windows could not start the Network List Service service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". what might i have done to make this happen and what can i do to try to fix it?haus

Sitting with the exact same problem, has anyone figured this out, without having to re-install vista??

AAAHHHAAAAA!!!!! Got it! The error I had for the past few weeks was: CoId={5608FAF9-E5FA-48E5-B556-E726B0892484}: The user "USER" dialed a connection named Standard Modem over Bluetooth link (OTA) which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 31. Log Name: ApplicationSource: RasClientEvent ID: 20227 I found an app calles RArepair.exe, from another error , that seems to remove and add RAS again, and this worked for me!!! Finaly, I have my dial-up connection back again!!! I cant seem to attach files, but search for RArepair.exe, I only read about it in one of the forums, and found it quicly using google.

Code 31 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) Recommended resolution Update the driver You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site. In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver.
