Uninstalling SCEP 2012 - not valid epp.msi
I am trying to uninstall SCEP 2012 and I have a number of computers failing.  They are looking for epp.msi but when I point them to the folder where it resides Windows Installer says its not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft Security Client.  I've tried reruning SCEPInstall but of course it says the product is already installed, before I shut the installation down I copied the temp folder that has a fresh copy of epp.msi but it doesn't like that either.  I have a mixture of both Win7 and WinXP clients.

Check the logs in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client\Support

Sounds like there's a version mismatch between the version of epp.msi you're pointing to and the one it's expecting.

I should say the majority of the computers failing are WinXP.  I checked c:\program files\microsoft security client but I don't see a support folder there, or any logs.

The equivalent location on XP should be C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client\Support

(Though I'm not 100% sure of the exact path because I haven't worked on an XP system in quite a while...)

I see a number of different setup logs with versions 4.1.522.0, 4.2.233.1, 4.3.215.0, 4.4.304.0, and 4.5.216.0.  So it certainly sounds like a version mismatch.  I've been looking around the SCCM server for source files but have came up empty.  Any suggestions where I would like for the old source files?

Thanks

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you could double-click the scepinstall.exe at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Client. It will extracts all files to a folder at the root of C. The Epp.msi exist in C:\.....\amd64 folder.

Yes that is correct.  I will get a message that scep is already installed, if I don't close the message the amd64 directory will stay there and I am able to copy it to an alternate location before I close the message and it disappears.  When I try to uninstall again I point to this fresh amd64 folder and it still tells me its not a vailid install file.

Depending on which specific version you need, you can either go back to the ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 RTM media (ISO file) or download the corresponding CU which contains the correct version of scepinstall.exe / epp.msi. You can then use a tool like 7-zip to extract ISO/EXE/MSI files until you get down to scepinstall.exe (in some cases, you may need to manually rename the file from KEY_scepinstall_exe to scepinstall.exe.) Here's a list that maps scepinstall.exe version to ConfigMgr version:

4.1.522.0 = ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 RTM

4.2.223.0 = ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 Antimalware Platform Update - KB2828233

4.3.215.0 = ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 CU3 - KB2882125

4.4.304.0 = ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 CU4 - KB2922875

4.5.216.0 = ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 CU5 - KB2978017
