Quite frankly I wouldn't bother. The potential problems outweigh any possible gains.Ron

I don't know, because I never used it. But Outlook Express isn't updated anymore I guess, so there will not be too may problems. You can always reinstall OE.Grard

I was too optimistic, OE is no longer available as a download, because IE6 had a funeral and OE was part of the IE6 download, as far as I know. http://ie6funeral.com/ So leave OE where it is, if you expect any trouble....Grard

You cannot uninstall Outlook Express. It is physically impossible. You can uncheck it in the Control Panel, but it will always remain on your machine. That said, an OE with no messages in it takes up very little space and if space is an issue, you need to be looking elsewhere to save space, or gain some with a new HDD. Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]

Bruce; Could you give me the steps to uncheck outlook on the control pane? The only function I use is the add/delete function. Please advise. TonyTJM

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add remove Windows Components (at the left). Uncheck OE there. Also, if you make the Inbox Read Only, OE will never open.In OE: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.Right click on Inbox.dbx | Properties and make it Read Only. Bruce; I thank you I think you helped me on this one. I was concerned becase one point in time all e-mail was duplicated and put in outlook. That's why I was worried about space. I unchecked outlook and it should be fine hereafter. Another question if you have time for this one. When my security runs a cleanup it removes all my entries I have in the start Run. Can I recapture these entries? Also the entries of addresses in my browse tool bar are gone. Can I retreive this history? What bucket does it go into? Please advise. Tony TJM

Outlook and Outlook Express are two completely different programs.Actually, all you had to do was to remove the account from OE in Tools | Accounts and it wouldn't receive any messages. What security program and what entries? Bruce; I did uncheck outlook express. Should I worry about it? In what page for the tools and how do I get it? Maybe a silly question for you but Im not too swift. TJM

You would need to recheck OE and open it. Tools is on the OE main page Menu Bar.If you don't open OE, it can't receive messages, but I would remove the account anyway and then uncheck OE in the Control Panel again. Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]

Bruce; I'm back! I went to the OE and the accounts. It came back with a screen and the first tab was e-mails. This section was blank with no e-mail address on this page. I therefore do not have to remove account as you suggested. I consider if there is no e-mail address then I wouldn't get any e-mail messages in OE. I also would like to point out that there is no tab for turning off account on this page. Please advise If you think I missed anything.TJM

You can not uninstall the outlook express from the machine, but you can be uncheck it. You can find many manual methods to do from different websites. But the outlook express will settle in very very less space. If your problem matters with space issue, you can find it so.

Hi, Bruce! Every time I turn my computer on, I receive an Outlook Express notification-type alert box which says: Outlook Express To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact message. This may take up to a few minutes. OK Cancel I don't use Outlook Express, so I'm not sure why this box comes up. Can you tell what I need to do to make this go away permanently? Thanks for your help! In Windows Search, you have to tell it to stop indexing OE. Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspx In the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express. You may be asked to compact one more time. Allow it and you shouldn't see the prompt again.Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

Hi, Bruce! I followed your instructions and it worked! Thank you so much!! Do you have a suggestion about how I can get help with my User Accounts? I'm sorry if I'm asking this in the wrong place. I'm new to this forum-thing and not sure how to navigate through it yet. When I turn my computer on, I get the Welcome Screen. I want my computer to go right to my desktop. Someone told me to go to Start, Control Panel, User Accounts, Change The Way Users Log On or Off, Uncheck the Use Welcome Screen Box...so I did. When I turned my computer on tonight, my computer went to a log in box, which still didn't get me to what I wanted to happen. So, I went back through the steps to change back to use the Welcome Screen. But when I got to the User Accounts screen, I noticed that my users account changed. My user account now says that it's the computer administrator and it wasn't like this before I made the change. The user account that use to say it was the computer administrator now says it's the ASP.NET Machine A....'s, Limited Account, Password Protected. I thought it was a no-no for someone to have their user account be the computer administrator. Is this correct? What did I do wrong and how to I change it back to the way it was? Help...please! I'm freaking out a little!! Thanks! Stephanie

You're welcome. Glad that's over. For your other issue, I know it's easy, but I don't recall how to do it. I would suggest asking in the XP Desktop And Personalization forum. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpdesktop/threads These forums are kinda lumped together.Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]
