Unidentified network -- bugs still exist
The "Unidentified network" problem that was evident in Vista is still contained in W7 RC1. (I am scared to use the word "the" as there may be a number of bugs in this space, and lots of user-errors that trigger this outcome, which I imagine is why it is taking so long for Microsoft to sort it out.)Anyway, my scenario:1. Installed W7 at Location L1 and connected via WIFI to a Belkin N1 ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router. Worked fine. Was able to set network location to home as required.2. Same day moved to location L2 and attempted to connect via WIFI to another Belkin N1 ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router. Failed with "unidentified network problem". It failed, with same "unidentified network" characteristiceven when attempting to connect via ethernet cable. Result was that required internet access from L2 was prevented.Solution that allowed networking to behave as expected from L2:Step 1. Uninstalled every device listed under "Network adapters" inside of Device Management (Start-->Computer--right click-->Manage). This included bluetooth, ethernet and wifi devices for me.Step 2.Uninstalled Vodafone Mobile Connect software (separately used for 3G connectivity). I'm not sure if this step is required.Step 3.Restart modem and computer. After those steps W7 allowed me to connect via wifi or cable at L2 in the manner expected. I have not been back to L1 to see if I can still connect there. My computer's networking devices as reported by device manager: Broadcom 440x/10/100 Integrated Controller, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, Bluetooth device.
