Unicode Files Names
Dear TechNet WinRar often extracts files, especially MP3 with foregn unicode names i.e.: 01 1.mp3 This obviously comes from a Russian OS. This russian name displays perfectly in Explorer. No software, not even windows explorer can open. read or rename or even delete it. When deleting you get "Could not find item". Is this a shortcoming in Windows 7? I have seem 1000's posts with guys struggling with Windows filenames containing illegal characters i.e. & " ." in the end, yet windows has no problems allowing these to be created, how can the filenames be illegal? They should not have been allowed to created in the 1st place? When you view the dos name with dir /x you get 01 ??????? 1.mp3 Its seems clear that Windows 7 interprets the filename on its own file system incorrectly, and I fail to see why Microsoft does not fix this? You can remove the parent with rd /s, but I'd rather rename it to a proper filename to use the files after all. How can I get Windows to see handle these properly? Thanks Johan

There is nothing wrong with what Windows is doing. The name that is in the archive is what is being displayed upon extraction. So, there is nothing for Windows to fix. If you don't want files with foreign characters on your system, then quit downloading the stuff and you won't have any problem! Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thats the dummest reply I have heard up to date. I have stunning Japanese music in MP3 and windows cannot rename or handle those either. Its standard Unicode characters and Windows should interpret it correctly. The 8.3 short filename system does!

You are being absolutely ridiculous and make absolutely no sense whatsoever! Windows does not interpret anything! It writes exactly what it sees! The 8.3 filename system cannot read Unicode, so it fills in with '?' characters. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Do you think its is 32 bit problem?
May 21st, 2011 4:32pm

OK the plot thickens ... My C drive is a MBR raid 5 of 600 Gig drive. You have to have MBR or Windows wont boot it. My D Drive is 10 x 500 gig drives raid 5 also. MBR will not see more than 2 TB in size (you can have a bigger drive and it will see 2 TB only) To overcome this you can format the drive in windows to GPT, you get the option when you initialize the drive - whoch supports humungous drives. Hence my D drive works great as 4.06 TB. When I rename a text file on C drive "01 1.mp3" it works fine, rename, delete etc. (thanks Rick never thought to check this here before) When I place it on D it says cannot find the file! There IS a BUG here !! Its got something to do with the GPT disk records. I thought it might be permission related first but you cant even set the attributes or permissions because windows just wont see the file. Johan

Create a text file in Windows and name it "01 1.mp3", thats unicode right? Now try to rename it .... If these are illegal file names - why does the OS allow it?! That translates to lession 1.mp3 in Russian, same with CHinese or any other unicode symbols ... perfectly legal. You'll never have this in Linux. You're telling me my russian friends cannot send me files because my OS cannot read it? Why can I not rename that to Lession 1.mp3 with Explorer, or command prompt?

Apparently there is something wrong with your system, but I have no idea what. I just created a file named "01 1.mp3" on my Windows 7 Pro x64 system twice. I was able to rename the file and I was able to delete the file without any problems whatsoever. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Is there a way to submit this as a bug to Microsoft and get a work-around? BTW all about GUID partitions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302873

We don't know that this is a bug or if it's something specific to you system. I have a GUID 2TB hard drive, so I'm not sure there is a relationship. Whatever the problem, it probabaly is somehting specfic to your system. I just don't have any idea as to what it might be.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, There should be something wrong with your system. Please boot in Safe Mode to see whether you can delete or rename the files. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Guys I am still at a loss over this. I booted in Safe Mode and the result is the same. Once you rename a file to 01 1.mp3 on a GUID partition it is displayed but the system cannot use it. It works just fine on another Raid on the same controller card with MBT. Since this happens in Safe mode with no other software running at all, I can only conclude that its a Raid driver issue. I'm hoping to get a response. Can anyone else can think of a reason why this would happen? Thanks

Hi, Please insert the Windows 7 Installation Disk, and then launch Windows RE. You may check whether you can rename or delete the items in Windows RE. Another sugggestion I can give is to try the Precess Monitor. Please use it to monitor the explorer to see the behavior while you are deleting the items. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
